Houstonians have a chance this summer to see artwork by some of the 20th century’s most iconic trailblazers.

“Picasso-Klee-Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen” is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from Wednesday, May 20 through Sept. 13.

The exhibition showcases dozens of pieces by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Henri Matisse from the private collection of prolific art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen. Led by the Museum Berggruen – Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the works are on an international tour that has already seen more than 1 million visitors, according to Museum Berggruen Curator Natalie Zimmer.

Located in MFAH’s Beck Building, the exhibition is framed by bold primary colors and separated not by artist but by theme — juxtaposing the unique styles of Picasso, Klee and Matisse while also highlighting their common threads. Themes include portraits, landscapes, still life and the human figure, all displayed in ways that were groundbreaking for their time.

Featured pieces range from paintings and drawings to cut-out collages and sculptures as well as promotional materials from throughout the artists’ careers and video footage of them working. The exhibition also incorporates pieces from MFAH’s own collection, rounding out this cross-continental experience.

The MFAH Main Campus is open Wednesdays through Mondays.
