Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s seminal drama film, Ninja Scroll, will be shown at Berlinale, the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, in 4K. And for fans who can’t make it to Berlin this weekend, next year, Ninja Scroll will be released as a limited edition Blu-ray Steel Book in 4K Ultra HD.
Originally released in 1993, Ninja Scroll is set during the age of samurai in the Edo period of feudal Japan. The film follows mercenary swordsman Kibagami Jubei, who battles the supernatural ninas the Eight Devils of Kimon to prevent them from overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. He’s assisted in his quest by government spy Dakuan and the toxin-infused but powerful Kagero.
In 2024, AMC Networks’ Sentai and HIDIVE released the film in over 500 theaters across the U.S. to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Now, it has been restored and remastered through a 4K scan of the original 35mm negative, followed by damage repairs and color correction for its showing at Berlinale.
“We’re both thrilled and humbled to be able to preserve the original 1993 Ninja Scroll film as a modern digital movie. This is Ninja Scroll at its very best!” said Sentai president John Ledford.
“Ninja Scroll in 4K is nothing short of a pristine version of this cinematic masterpiece, presented in stunning high definition, contrast and color,” Ledford continued. “The digital adaptation offers a truly immersive experience. In fact, seeing it is like watching Ninja Scroll for the very first time!”
Ninja Scroll will debut on Sunday, February 15 at 10 p.m. CET at Berlinale, with encore screenings on February 16 and 22. It’s the first-ever animated film selected for the Berlinale Classics portion of the festival’s programming. For more information on the screening, click here.
