Machine Gun Wizards creators Christian Ward and Sami Kivelä are reteaming at Oni Press on The Forever Home, a six-issue series starting this fall. A dark fable, the comic follows billionaire scientist Henry D’mour, who lives in a high-tech sanctuary he designed to protect him and his family from the climate apocalypse. Times passes much more slowly in the house than in the outside world, meaning on the day an accident occurs, they have no idea of what to expect when whatever has evolved out there intrudes.

The full synopsis reads, “Henry D’mour could have saved the world. But he didn’t. Instead, in a desperate bid to save himself, his wife, and their two children, he constructed the Forever Home — an ark of luxury and ultramodern convenience insulated from the agony of the planet’s death throes outside its walls… and even time itself. Inside the Forever Home, only twenty minutes pass for every year on the outside… allowing the D’mour family to slowly enact their plans for a new world as their automated environment and robotic companions keep them safe. Safe on the inside. Always inside. Until a childish misstep accidentally breaks the Forever Home’s barrier… and what’s outside decides it wants back in…”
Ward says, “The horror of The Forever One was easy to find. It’s in the ever increasing news stories that seem to surround us. Stories of a changing world. Of more and more extreme weather. Where it’s not hard to imagine people in the world whose survival is being pushed to the brink by that change and of course, it’s equally not hard to believe the conspiracies of the billionaires building themselves bunkers and life-rafts for imagined apocalypse. That’s the angry seed from which we grow the story of this book. Soaked in the terror that sometimes you have to go impossible lengths to keep your family safe.”
He adds, “In my two decades of comic making, The Forever Home is one of the books I’m most proud of, not least because Sami Kivelä (who I’m reteaming with after working together on Machine Gun Wizards) is doing the work of his career. So I hope you’ll join us in The Forever Home, but please, make sure to close the door after you.”
Kivelä himself says, “Designing this post-apocalyptic book was a fascinating process of visualizing what the world looks like when the past meets the future. Our house and its surroundings are filled with retro-inspired sci-fi elements and robots, but they also include many details that feel familiar to people today. I think that this contrast creates an unexpected setting that invites our readers to explore more.”
Issue #1 will be released on September 9, with covers by Ward, Kivelä, Frany, David Rubín, and Miguel Mercado. In the meantime, Ward’s next creator-owned series, The Patron, will debut from Ignition Press on July 29, while issue #3 of his current book, Event Horizon: Inferno, will arrive on July 1. Kivela’s next comics beforehand, Doctor Who: Circuit Breaker #1-2, will be released on July 8, and August 4.
