The David House Heritage Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the history of the Mountaintop area. Its volunteers were able to compile history together from various sources for its latest book, “Mountaintop History: Memories of the Last 50 Years.”

SNOW SHOE — The walls of the David House Heritage Museum hold the echoes of the past, but a new book is set to bring those stories directly into the community’s hands.

The museum has announced the publication of “Mountaintop History: Memories of the Last 50 Years,” which captures the region’s evolution over the last half-century.

You may follow the David House Museum on Facebook for future sales events, or contact davidhousemuseum@gmail.com to purchase a copy of the book.

The new volume is a follow-up to the 1976 edition, “Mountain Top Area: A Bicentennial History,” by the museum’s founder, Bill Hall.

To bridge the gap between the Bicentennial and the present day, museum volunteers partnered with local historian and author, Cordes Chambers, III.

Cordes Chambers, III, a local historian who played a large role in the creation of the book, is seen speaking at the David House Heritage Museum during its historical day while its president, Zach Chambers, looks on.

For Chambers, who has documented the Mountaintop Area’s distant past, this project hit close to home.

“My books dealt with events that occurred many years ago,” Chambers remarked. “This endeavor felt different; at times, it was surreal to explore events and places I grew up with and to interview people I’ve known most of my life.”

The book is the result of an effort by a small but dedicated committee of six. To ensure no stone was left unturned, the team looked beyond official records to find the “heartbeat” of the Mountaintop area. The project’s scope included:

    — 44 hours of personal interviews with local residents.

    — A meticulous review of 50 years of Snow Shoe Township meeting minutes.

The David House Heritage Museum recently announced the completion of its latest book, “Mountaintop History: Memories of the Last 50 Years” which chronicles the Mountaintop area over the recent decades.

    — Ninety eight detailed responses from the public regarding local businesses, churches and civic organizations — both those still standing and those long gone.

To bring these stories to life, the book features more than 90 photographs, most curated from David House’s extensive private collection.

For the team behind the book, the goal was to create more than just a timeline; it was about preserving a sense of place.

Kelly Miller, one of the book’s editors, emphasized the importance of capturing these stories before they faded.

“We didn’t just want to list facts and dates,” said Miller. “We wanted to capture the spirit of the people who built this community over the last five decades. This book is a thank you letter to the region. Seeing these individual memories woven into a single narrative has been incredibly moving.”
