Marvel Dimensions by Alex Ross is set to be one of the hottest books of the year – a fully painted look at the Marvel Universe that turns to something unexpected. All delivered with the sweep and emotion that only Alex Ross can deliver. He’s described it as “a combination of my most famous works, Marvels and Kingdom Come, where my love of comics history and ambitious world-building collide.”
And in an unusual move for publisher Marvel Arts/Abrams ComicArts, Marvel Dimensions will have a special edition just for the direct market, available only through Lunar Distribution. And it’s not just a variant cover, it’s a slipcased volume with an acetate see-through window showcasing the striking cover (above). AND you get an an exclusive print. So quite a stunning package as you can see in the video below.
If you want to go even further, there’s an even more limited edition that includes the exclusive print hand signed by Alex Ross.
The regular bookstore edition of Dimensions (published by Marvel Arts, the Marvel centric imprint of Abrams ComicArts and distributed by Hachette) will be available in bookstores in September, but the Lunar edition will hit shelves in October, with a MSRP of $50 for the regular edition and $100 for the special edition. FOC for the books has been extended, and you can contact your local comics shop to order your copy.
Abrams also released a comics-shop variant for Fantastic Four: Full Circle, Ross’s previous Marvel graphic novel. And it certainly backs up what we’ve been hearing: traditional publishers are getting in on the booming comics shop market, and seeing increased sales through Lunar and other direct market distributors, especially with a little added zhuzh like this.
A little more on Marvel Dimensions:
Marvel Dimensions opens with a sweeping tour through the classic origins of Marvel’s most iconic characters. Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine, and many others appear in dramatic, fully painted spreads that echo their earliest stories. A narrator describes each moment with confidence, guiding the reader through these touchstones of Marvel’s history. But as the story moves forward, the tone begins to shift. The voice behind the narration is not who the readers expect and carries a motive that slowly pushes the narrative somewhere darker and far more unpredictable.
Once this change becomes clear, the book expands into something larger and more surprising. Storylines twist in on themselves, characters behave in unexpected ways, and events ripple across the Marvel Universe with growing tensions. Ross uses the structure of the book to create anticipation and pull the reader deeper into a mystery that keeps widening. Every new sequence reveals another layer, building toward a final act that reframes everything that came before it. A bonus 32-page comic book is included that is pivotal to the storyline.
