During Friday’s Crunchyroll Showcase panel at Anime Expo 2026, the company revealed the first teaser trailer, key visuals, cast, staff, and a January 2027 release date for The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All anime.
Mariya Ise (Made in Abyss, The Promised Neverland) will voice Mitsuki Koga and she will be joined by Akari Kito (Demon Slayer) as Aya Osawa. Both are reprising their roles from the 2024 drama CD adaptation.
Cloverworks (Bocchi the Rock!, Spy x Family) will produce the anime with Masashi Ishihama (Spy x Family, The Girl Who Leapt through Time) directing the series. Kanna Hirayama (Oshi No Ko, My Dressup Darling) will handle character design, with series composition by Rino Yamasaki.
The teaser also confirms that Nirvana’s “Breed” will serve as the anime’s opening theme. During the reveal, Dave Grohl said, “Kurt Cobain would have loved this series.”
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All anime is based on the story by Sumiko Arai, which began as a short story on X in 2022 before being serialized on Pixiv Comic and later published in print by Kadokawa and Yen Press.
The story follows high schooler Aya, who falls head over heels for a male employee at the local CD shop who turns out to be her female classmate, Mitsuki. The series follows their growing relationship as they experience life and high school together, while gradually discovering what they mean to one other.
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All will premiere in January 2027 on Crunchyroll.
