The fire broke out at the theater around 10 a.m. involving a large amount of electrical material, according to the FDNY. One firefighter had minor injuries after the fire. No other injuries were reported, and all theater staff were safely evacuated, FDNY officials said.
The building sustained “substantial damage” to the fourth and fifth floors, which will require repairs, according to fire officials. According to a vacate order from the Department of Buildings, there is a hole in the theater’s roof.
DOB officials said fire damage spread to a next-door hotel and affected multiple rooms.
Krissy Giffin, who is staying at a hotel next door, said she was told to evacuate.
“I threw on some clothes and ran down the stairs,” she told PIX11 News.
