Discover SkyLume, the latest marvel in Huntsville’s public art scene—a 60-foot illuminated sculpture at John Hunt Park exploring themes of connection and energy.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Arts Huntsville, in partnership with the City of Huntsville, has completed installation of SkyLume, a 60-foot illuminated public art sculpture now standing at John Hunt Park near Joe Davis Stadium.

The spiraling artwork, designed by artist Adam Buente of Project One Studio in Indianapolis, is located at the roundabout south of Joe Davis Stadium near the park’s festival grounds. A dedication for SkyLume was held Wednesday, May 13, 2026, during a Huntsville City Football Club match.

SkyLume is the newest addition to the city’s public art collection and features painted steel and aluminum construction, kinetic components and programmable lighting. The sculpture includes a central ribbon form surrounded by a spiraling outer ribbon, creating a sense of motion and energy.

“The sculpture explores themes of gravitational pull, community connection, and forward momentum,” said Buente. “The central ribbon symbolizes an unseen force that draws people in, while the encircling ribbon reflects the energy and movement of the community around it.”

By day, the sculpture’s kinetic elements respond to wind and sunlight. At night, integrated lighting transforms the piece into a shifting display of color and pattern, designed to serve both as a visual landmark and a wayfinding feature within John Hunt Park.

“John Hunt Park is where our kids compete, where our families gather, and where Huntsville celebrates regional and national championship competitions. Now, a new landmark stands in front of Joe Davis Stadium that serves as a beacon for everything that happens here,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle.

The Huntsville Public Art Committee selected SkyLume through a competitive process that began with nearly 100 international applicants. Five finalists were chosen in early 2024, with Buente selected for the commission later that year.

The sculpture is a permanent installation now on view to the public at John Hunt Park year-round.
