We’ve had a few things produced previously in adapting the Seishun Buta Yarō light novel series into anime, and now a new anime project is in the works. In September 2022, we learned that they’ll be adapting the 8th and 9th novels in the series with Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. Those projects were done as feature films that have come out previously.
Last year saw more make their way to anime as the University Arc was adapted, which began in the Rascal Does Not Dream of a Lost Singer from 2020. Going under the title Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, it saw a July 5th, 2025, premiere date, and when it wrapped up, we learned about the next project with a new theatrical film for release in 2026 with Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend.
The film has an October 16th, 2026, release date, and as the TV rebroadcast gets underway, they’ve dropped a new memorial promo and visual for the film with a focus on Asami Seto as Mai Sakurajima.

Plot Concept: Bunny girls do not live in libraries. This is simply common sense. And yet, that’s exactly where Sakuta runs into one in the wild. More bewildering is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, an older student who attends the same school and is a well-known actress currently on break from industry work. Wanting to find out more about the mystery surrounding Mai and maybe get a little closer to her in the process, Sakuta launches an investigation to figure out what’s causing this bunny girl to be invisible and unnoticed by everyone around them.
