CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Piccolo Spoleto Festival filled Marion Square with art and energy as locals and visitors came out to support artists during the Outdoor Art Exhibition.
Now in its 49th year, the festival continues to celebrate art, culture, and community giving attendees the chance to experience unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. What began in 1977 has grown into a major creative showcase, often compared to Italy’s Festival of Two Worlds.
Marion Square was transformed into a vibrant open-air marketplace, featuring local talent from across the Lowcountry. From oil paintings and watercolors to photography, poetry, and handcrafted items, there was something for every art lover.
Artists lined the square, sharing their work and connecting directly with the public. Visitors browsed at their own pace engaging with creators and discovering pieces that spoke to them.
One artist News 2 spoke with says events like this go beyond making a sale, offering encouragement and exposure for those in the creative community.
“Coming out to support Piccolo helps the individual and local artist. A lot of artists are not in galleries, so this is an opportunity for the greater public to see their work. It would really help a lot if you came out, browse even if you don’t purchase anything just talking to the artist encourages them to keep going. Let them know if you appreciate their craft, because we need inspiration,” said Alvin Glen, a Piccolo Spoleto artist.
The festival continues through June 7 at Marion Square.
