It’s been over a decade since we last talked about the OVA series Mystery of the Necronomicon. The title, produced by animation studio Discovery, is originally known as Kuro no Danshou, and at that time, we talked about a new DVD re-release from Critical Mass video in 2014.
Last month, the OVA series was scheduled for streaming through OceanVeil, with the first part arriving today, on February 19th, 2026. It’s now gone live on the service in its original Japanese language with English subtitles.
The four-episode OVA began release in 1999 from directors Hideki Takayama and Yoshitaka Makino, based on the story by Ryo Saga.
The Japanese cast includes Hidetoshi Nakamura as Satoshi Suzusaki, Yōko Asada as Asuka Kashiwagi, and Yumi Takada as Haruka Sakimizu.
The English cast includes Lynna Dunham as Haruka Sakimizu, Tara Jayne as Asuka Kashiwagi, and Tom Wilson as Satoshi Suzusaki. The English dub was produced for Central Park Media’s Anime 18 label.
Plot concept: In a resort condominium on a snowy mountain, Suzusaki, a private detective, and Asuka, who were supposed to enjoy their long-awaited vacation, encounter a bizarre case. People killed with their eyes gouged out… A girl with aphasia… Mysterious suspects… What could the brutal killings mean? Is it some kind of ritual? And what is the Necronomicon that sealed ancient magical secrets? The first chapter of the suspense horror where one mystery begets another.
