Insidious is one of the few horror franchises to be multiple entries deep and not have an outright disaster among them. One of the reasons for this lies in its refusal to simply recreate the first movie (a modern horror classic) ad Infinitum. Each new chapter builds on the lore of its supernatural world and feels like a consequential sequel, regardless of the quality of the story.
A trailer for the latest movie in the series has just released, and it looks like the franchise still has a lot to give. It’s titled Insidious: Out of The Further, and it’s slated for release in August of this year.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe. When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.
The trailer hypes things by going for the universe’s greatest hits. Insidious is known for featuring some of the creepiest ghosts in moder horror, and they’re very present this time around as well. Old timey stylings and heavy makeup continue to set these phantoms apart, and their numbers seem to have swelled from last time.
More ghosts is a good thing, because Out of The Further is throwing quite a curveball at audiences with one particular detail that’s revealed in the trailer. Gemma (Amelia Eve) can bring demons from The Further back to the real world. With this, Insidious’ version of the paranormal stands to grow a fair amount. There’s a clear intention to wade into uncharted waters, something more horror franchises should be more than willing to do.
We’re not getting a reimagining of the first movie that merely substitutes old character with new ones. Gemma and her daughter get a potentially more sinister group of entities to deal with. That’s promise enough to warrant another Insidious film, and maybe a direct sequel to it (what Insidious 2 was for the first one, an immediate continuation).
A focus on haunted parents and the fears that take hold regarding the safety of their children also seems to be taking center stage. This was a defining feature of the first film, which focused on the Lambert family (which was portrayed by Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins). The last entry, subtitled “The Red Door,” gave fans a clean ending to their story. Though they weren’t the protagonists of each movie, there was a sense that their arc was always intended to be seen all the way through.
Other signature components of the universe make it to the trailer, especially with the return of psychic Elise Rainier (played by Lynn Shane). This character has become the heart of the franchise, a constant presence that serves to usher audiences into the universe. She has a role in Out of The Further and it’ll be interesting to see how she evolves this go-around.
The horror universe that James Wan and Leigh Whannell created has earned each of new entry since its inception. It stands out for the care it affords to character-building and myth-making. Based on the trailer alone, Out of The Further seems to be heading in the same direction. This is sure to make it one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2026.
