Netflix’s Devil May Cry series has been renewed for a third season, which will also be the final season. Series showrunnder Adi Shankar confirmed in a new statement that this was always the plan and, in fact, he envisioned it as a movie trilogy “disguised as a television series.”
“For those of you who have been paying attention to the episode names, I have been showing you the structure the entire time. This was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat. Season 1 was Inferno. Season 2 was Purgatorio. Season 3 will be Paradiso. These three seasons make up ‘The Force Edge Saga.’ Since inception, ‘The Force Edge Saga’ was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series.”
Devil May Cry Season 2 was released last month and has been incredibly well-received. We gave the new season an 8/10, noting that it “goes bigger than its predecessor in every way.” Shankar had previously told IGN that he viewed the leap between seasons similar to the jump between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

“Season 2 is just way, way, way bigger in terms of scope and scale,” Shankar told IGN. “So it’s the difference between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. That’s the comp. Or Halo 1 and Halo 2, where in terms of just scale and scope – orders of magnitude bigger and larger. And the tone is just completely different on top of that. The tone is very, very different, so it cuts deeper.”
It remains to be seen if Season 3 will be the show’s Dark Knight Rises, a movie that upped the stakes on a cataclysmic scale after Bane conquered Gotham City and threatened to destroy it with a nuclear bomb. While I can’t imagine there being a nuke in Devil May Cry Season 3, perhaps there will be some kind of apocalyptic threat that pushes our beloved heroes to the brink.
There are currently no details about Devil May Cry Season 3’s plot or release date. However, Season 1 was released in April 2025, so there may be a chance Season 3 debuts next spring as well. Either way, it’s interesting to see that the show won’t be overstaying its welcome and may, in fact, leave us wanting more.
