NBC is no stranger to the mockumentary sitcom, with shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Paper. St. Denis Medical, one of the network’s newest sitcoms in the genre, just received its fate, and it’s good news for fans.
According to Deadline, NBC has renewed St. Denis Medical for a third season. The show is currently airing its second season, with its season finale set to air on Feb. 2.
St. Denis Medical follows an “underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while keeping it all together,” per a synopsis of the show. NBC stated in a release that St. Denis Medical is “the only primetime comedy across all broadcast networks to see season-over-season linear growth in the 18-49 demo.” The statistic does exclude Fox comedies, which air with NFL games as lead-ins on some Sunday nights.
NBC also renewed Reba McEntire’s sitcom, Happy’s Place, for a third season. “Both St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place have delivered comedic brilliance over their first two seasons, truly connecting with our audience with hilarious characters, and remain hugely important and successful programs to our primetime and Peacock lineup,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBC and Peacock.
Katz continued, “A huge thank you to the producers, casts, and crews of both shows who have brought these wonderful stories to life and will now continue to tell their laugh-out-loud stories.”
St. Denis Medical Star on Her ‘Optimistic’ Character
St. Denis Medical comes from creators Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper, Kaliko Kauhai, and David Alan Grier. Tolman, who plays supervising nurse Alex on the show, talked with CBR about her character in a previous interview.
“I think that she’s kind of like the stand-in for the health care system. She’s like, ‘I can do it all. I can help everyone. I can do it all,’” Tolman said of playing Alex. She continued, “But we can’t, she can’t. It’s impossible,” Tolman explained, “We don’t have the resources to do it. She’s going to burn out. It’s impossible to keep that many balls in the air, but she really wants to. She’s got a good heart, and she’s a good nurse. Her heart’s in the right place.”
Tolman also touched on Alex’s relationship with David Alan Grier’s character, Dr. Ron. “David always says that Ron looks at Alex and sees how he used to be. He sees that he used to also be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and optimistic, and thinking, ‘I can do it. I can save everyone. I can do it all.’ And now time has worn him down, and he’s just tired,” she said.
St. Denis Medical airs its Season 2 finale on Feb. 2 on NBC. The first two seasons are streaming on Peacock. A release date for Season 3 has not yet been announced.
