What They Say
Inose Hinata, 35, is a hopelessly single, attractive woman who runs an English conversation school out of her apartment. But everything changes one fateful evening when Shotaro, a former student, knocks on her door—and he’s no longer the shy kid she remembers. At 18, just about to finish high school, Shotaro has transformed into an irresistibly hunky, confident young man. Even more shocking, he asks for her hand in marriage!
Seventeen years her junior, Shotaro’s maturity, charm, and burning passion leave Hinata breathless. As the lines between their past teacher-student relationship begin to blur, can Hinata resist his hot and heavy advances? And, more importantly, does she even want to?

Known originally as Oshiego-kun to wa Dekimasen, it’s also searchable as 教え子くんとはできません, and it’s localized as My Former Student is a Hunk?! for the English release. The manga comes from Nariie Shinichirou, which began in 2023 and is ongoing with one volume as of the start of these reviews. Full volume reviews just aren’t my jam or in my workflow, especially an omnibus, so I wanted to work through a series on my own schedule and spend the time to talk about it chapter by chapter. Seven Seas Entertainment picked it up in English, with its first volume arriving in January 2026, giving fans a new series to read through its Steamship imprint that’s designed for “sexy romance for women,” which invariably includes me because this kind of stuff is my jam.
With a title like this, yeah, there are obviously problems to be had with it. Keeping all of that in mind, the premise is certainly amusing enough as we’re introduced to 35-year-old Hinata, a woman who has been running an English class out of her apartment for over a decade now. She’s had a lot of students come and go, but one of her first was an elementary school kid named Shotaro. Shotari wasn’t interested in English until she knocked on the door and he was just smitten as a kid. He ended up signing up and went religiously to be close to her for several years, up until high school. And while he only took classes through sixth grade, he stopped by during middle school as well, always with the same kinds of questions. He wanted to marry here and regularly propositioned her, while also finding out all about her. She brushed it away cutely, saying he was too young and offhandedly saying they would have to wait until he was eighteen.
That cute little boy is now eighteen, and having spent his high school years keeping apprised of her interests and the kinds of people and things she’s into, he’s taken advantage of it and a really big growth spurt that happened due to genetics and is now basically her ideal man, albeit one that’s a bit young. But he certainly doesn’t look eighteen, either . Having him show up at the door when she’s thinking it’s a delivery, and being a bit drunk as well, does not make any of this go well as she’s confused, trying to piece it together, and to try and put some distance here. But all it takes is for him to hold her briefly, and it feels like it’s all over. She’s likely been touch-starved for so long as well, having not been dating or on the apps, that it’s going to make a real impact. This is the moment that gets the two-page spread, and it’s definitely worth the payoff as she kind of just falls into that embrace.
In Summary:
To be fair to Hinata, she’s calling him a child and is really thrown by all of this and hasn’t committed to a thing. He’s thinking ahead in that while he is still in high school, he is eighteen so it’s not technically illegal. That’s going to fluster her even more, but he’s been biding his time and is going to go all-in on figuring out how to make this work. The chapters are pretty fun and amusing, very short overall with a lot packed into a good panel layout, so it provides a lot of backstory quickly so it can move forward from here. It’s fast and engaging, and you get a good sense of both characters while being curious as to how far it’ll actually go. With the shorter length and as little material as there is, it’s an easy commit to check out since it’s fun and straightforward.
