Netflix is developing a series version of the Jodi Picoult novel “The Book of Two Ways,” Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The project hails from Matthew B. Roberts, who will pen the adaptation in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. Sony Pictures Television, where Roberts is under an overall deal, will produce.
Netflix declined to comment. Reps for Roberts and Picoult declined to comment.
“The Book of Two Ways” was originally published in 2020. The book follows a woman, Dawn Edelstein, who survives a plane crash and begins to to see two divergent paths for her future — one in which she returns to Boston with her husband and child, and another in which she returns to a career in Egyptology and a lover she left behind.
Roberts is best known for his work in the “Outlander” franchise, another Sony TV production. Roberts started out as a writer and producer on “Outlander,” eventually working his way up to showrunner. He is also the developer and showrunner on the prequel series “Outlander: Blood of My Blood.” The eighth and final season of “Outlander” is currently airing, with the series finale set to air on May 15. Meanwhile, “Blood of My Blood” is preparing to launch its second season later in 2026.
Along with “The Book of Two Ways,” Picoult is the author of such books as “My Sister’s Keeper,” “Nineteen Minutes,” “The Storyteller,” “A Spark of Light,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Mad Honey,” and “By Any Other Name.” Four of her books — “The Pact,” “Plain Truth,” “The Tenth Circle,” and “Salem Falls” — were previously adapted for TV. “My Sister’s Keeper,” meanwhile, was adapted into a film starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin in 2009.
