At last night’s PlayStation State of Play, Insomniac Games dropped an extended gameplay trailer for Wolverine. The bloody seven-minute footage follows the clawed mutant rescuing others of his kind (including Leech) being trafficked by the Reavers to the Sentinels’ creators, Trask Industries, before crossing paths with another hero on their trail: Jean Grey.
As stated on the PlayStation Blog, and an interview with Variety, the existence of mutants is still unknown to the public, and the X-Men have not been formed yet, with Wolverine protecting his kind as part of his former CIA black ops group Team X. It appears Logan has encountered Jean at least once, referring to her affectionately as “Red.”
We get to see how Wolverine’s healing factor will work in combat, with him being able to avoid dying if he has enough rage to heal rapidly after taking too much damage. Insomniac explains using up his adrenaline “leaves you vulnerable for a while after that. So, if you’re going to get back in the game, you’ve got to really focus on getting through the rest of this fight without losing all your health again.” The developer also confirmed the game will include the option for less blood and guts onscreen.
Characters seen in the trailer’s end montage include the previously revealed Mystique, Omega Red, and the Sentinels, as well as what appears to be Silver Samurai, an oddly Deadpool-esque looking ninja, and finally Wolverine’s nemesis himself, Victor Creed/Sabretooth. The game is now available to pre-order ahead of its release on the PlayStation 5 on September 15, with a deluxe digital edition available alongside the standard one, featuring exclusive suits and claw designs. Both will be available with pre-order bonuses like the classic brown suit, and four PlayStation avatars.
Wolverine wasn’t the only Marvel game at State of Play though, with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls receiving a new trailer unveiling Doctor Doom (SungWon Cho)’s faction, the Knights of Doom, which will include Magneto (James Arnold Taylor), Green Goblin (Spectacular Spider-Man‘s Steve Blum), and Carnage (Kellen Goff). The fighting game will be released on the PS5 and PC on August 6.
Other news at the event included release dates for Control Resonant (September 24), Silent Hill: Townfall (out the same day), and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 12, 2027, meaning it’ll miss the 30th anniversary of the franchise this year, but coincide with Lara Croft’s canonical birthday on Valentine’s). It capped off with the 20-minute reveal of God of War Laufey, a spin-off starring Deborah Ann Woll as Kratos’s late wife “Faye,” as she battles the gods of other pantheons in the afterlife.
The game, also starring Jack Quaid as gelatinous “cosmic cube” Phranque, and Perlina Lau as enchanted ribbon Rue, does not have an ETA, but it will mark the first God of War since 2022’s Ragnarok, and the third after the series relocated to the Norse realms in the 2018 release. You can watch the whole State of Play below in the meantime, and take a closer look at the full list of announcements on the PlayStation Blog.
