PEPPERELL — From mastering the mechanics of a camera to exploring the art of visual storytelling, the Lawrence Library will host two events this May that invite the community to engage with photography in both a hands-on and creative way.
“Basic Digital Photography I,” a five-session course led by photographer and instructor Nick DePasquale, begins Thursday, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Meeting Room at the Lawrence Library, 15 Main St. Designed for photographers using digital SLR or mirrorless cameras, the class focuses on building both technical skills and artistic awareness.
Participants will learn how to use their cameras in manual mode for greater creative control, while also exploring core concepts such as exposure, focusing, depth of field, and composition. The course emphasizes not only how to take a photograph, but how to “see like a photographer,” encouraging students to think more intentionally about the images they create.
Optional weekly shooting assignments will be offered between sessions, giving participants the opportunity to practice new skills and receive detailed feedback. Photo critiques will be provided via video, allowing students to revisit guidance and refine their work over time.
DePasquale, a Tyngsboro-based freelance photographer, brings more than 50 years of experience to the class, with a background that spans newspaper photography, magazine publishing, and work as a wedding, event and sports photographer.
In recent years, his focus has shifted toward fine art and travel photography, with an emphasis on composition and creative expression.
While the workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to develop skills, the library will also showcase DePasquale’s work in a special exhibit that reflects those same artistic principles in practice.
DePasquale’s work will be featured in the Lawrence Library’s Art Gallery, with an opening reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. The exhibit, “Getting to Know Cuba: Between Rhythm and Resilience,” reflects his evolving artistic approach and interest in capturing compelling, meaningful moments.
The exhibit will be on display through June 5.
The reception offers an opportunity to meet the artist, view his work, and learn more about his creative process. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Lawrence Library, and no registration is required.
“My exhibit brings an intimate look at everyday life in Cuba through moments of work, discipline, and human connection,” said DePasquale. “From tobacco fields and fishing communities to ballet studios and boxing gyms, the images reveal a culture shaped by resilience, creativity, and enduring spirit — where tradition and daily life move to a rhythm uniquely its own.”
Together, the workshop and exhibit highlight highlight DePasquale’s philosophy of moving beyond simply “taking pictures” to “making photographs,” using elements such as light, color, texture, and perspective to create images that resonate with viewers.
The photography program is funded in part by a grant from the Pepperell Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
