The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are some of the most iconic and timeless fantasy stories around. Spanning 6 films, a Prime Video series, and plenty of video games to play, it’s safe to say interest in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth is just has high as its ever ever. So if you’re looking to read the LotR books that started it all, you’ve got a surprising number of options available. For collectors specifically, there are some beautiful illustrated editions of not only the first two stories, but the supplemental Silmarillion collection of short stories and lore available as well.

There are actually multiple editions of each of the three illustrated editions, and they all make great gifts for Lord of the Rings fans. The Tolkien illustrated versions feature drawings and maps from the author himself, while the Alan Lee editions feature beautiful watercolors that catch the eye. To help you decide which books are right for you, we’ve broken it all down below.

The Lord of the Rings Tolkien Illustrated Editions

Each entry in the standard illustrated edition comes with beautiful Elvish cover art and sprayed page edges. They’re all hardcover and come with slipcovers for protection, each featuring an iconic moment or location from their respective stories. But the real draw here are the over 30 full color illustrations from Tolkien himself. You’ll get detailed maps, sketches, and incredibly deep lore insight not found in any other edition. And while each story is included in their entirety, there are plenty of never-before-published excerpts available to read for the first time, like the Book of Mazarbul from the Bridge of Khazad-dum chapter.

For the more dedicated collectors, each illustrated edition of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion are also available as deluxe editions. All of the standard illustrated edition-exclusive inclusions are here, but they’re each as massive, imposing tomes with gold lettering and sprayed page edges. They all come with 2 super detailed fold-out maps and insight from Christopher Tolkien, the author’s son.

    Alan Lee Illustrated Editions

If you’re looking for a collection of illustrated collections of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the box set illustrated by Alan Lee is a great alternative. Lee is an award-winning artist who also served as the conceptual designer on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films, and his watercolor illustrations he provides for all four books are incredibly immersive and eye-catching.
