The original Digimon anime has finally found a new digital home in the West, allowing fans to relive their greatest nostalgia in remastered high definition.
While the Digimon franchise has evolved significantly over the last two decades, the original 1999 series, Digimon Adventure, is widely considered the face of the entire monster-taming franchise. The series follows seven children –Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe and T.K. — who are whisked away from summer camp into the Digital World. There, they partner with their own Digimon companions to protect both worlds from evil forces.
The saga is famous for its escalating stakes, evolving from surviving the wild to battling the Four Dark Masters, a quartet of Mega-level villains who nearly conquered the Digital World.
First Digimon Adventure Anime Finds New Remastered Streaming Home on Disney+
Per Toei Animation, Digimon Adventure’s remastered HD version in English dubbed is now streaming on Disney+ in Canada. This addition marks a major victory for fans in the country, as the 54-episode series has often faced inconsistent availability on streaming platforms outside of Japan. Initially airing in 1999, the English version of the series became a pop culture phenomenon, competing directly with Pokémon at the turn of the millennium.
The original anime spawned a massive continuity that kept fans engaged for years. Its direct sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, introduced new characters along with the original cast. Although the franchise then diverged into standalone universes like Tamers and Frontier, Toei Animation revisited the Adventure timeline in the six-part film series Digimon Adventure tri.
Set six years after the original series, these latter films explored the DigiDestined’s struggles with growing up. This coming-of-age storyline ultimately concluded with the 2020 feature film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, which was also meant to act as the final installment of the Adventure series.
However, later that year, the franchise released a full reboot of the original series, titled Digimon Adventure (2020), retelling the story with modern animation and different plot beats. After this, a 2023 movie Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, was also released. However, the Adventure storyline was said to conclude with the 25th anniversary short film Digimon Adventure Beyond, with the video’s director, Hiroyuki Kakudo, sharing that no new content related to the original story is in the works.
Beyond streaming, the physical media market for Digimon has also seen a resurgence. Discotek Media recently released its Digimon the Movies Collection 2 on Blu-ray in 2025, finally bringing films like Revenge of Diaboromon and Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon to North American shelves. This followed the company’s previous release of the first four films from the franchise in 2024.
Digimon, which started as a digital pet toy in 1997, continues to expand with fresh projects, including the 2025 anime project Digimon Beatbreak and the upcoming RPG Digimon Story: Time Stranger, proving that the Digital World is far from finished.
