BOOM! Studios have announced they have acquired the comic book rights for the classic Nickelodeon cartoon Invader Zim. While full plans will be revealed at a later date, the publisher shared in an IGN exclusive that they will begin releasing new comics, and reprints of older ones, later this year.

Bryce Carlson, the VP of Business Development & Special Projects at BOOM!’s parent company Random House Worlds, stated, “Few properties have maintained the passionate, enduring fanbase that Invader Zim has. We have exciting plans to bring beloved out of print material back onto shelves, and BOOM! is going to usher in a new era of DOOM! with brand-new stories that expand the strange and chaotic world fans know and love. The new invasion has begun. You’ve been warned…”
Created by Jhonen Vasquez in 2001, Invader Zim follows the titular alien as he attempts to conquer Earth, while posing as a human school student. Vasquez and Nickelodeon frequently butted heads over the show’s dark and edgy humor, and it ultimately only lasted two seasons. However, the show earned a cult following, and it eventually returned as a feature film, Enter the Florpus, on Netflix in 2019.
Oni Press published comics based on the show from 2015 to 2021, which Vasquez penned several issues of, along with original series writer Eric Trueheart. Previous comics based on Nickelodeon cartoons released by BOOM! consist of Rugrats and Rocko’s Modern Life (both published from 2017 to 2019). A Nick Junior series based on their children’s graphic novel series Hex Vet, HexVets and Magic Pets, will premiere tomorrow in Australia on ABC Kids, and is expected to debut in the States later this year.
