It’s not only blooms that are bringing color to the community this spring.
With costumes, canvases and more, the arts are livening the local landscape.
Saturday, poetry readings at Twenty North Gallery and the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home celebrated National Poetry Month and America 250, respectively. Three county high schools (Eastern Hancock, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine) presented plays or musicals; Greenfield-Central’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” opens April 30. Hancock County Arts Council’s spring exhibit at Twenty North, featuring all types of themes and aesthetics, remains on display through Saturday. The gallery is open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.
Another exhibit — an open exhibit featuring all media, processes, subjects, themes and aesthetics — will take over the gallery in May. Artists are invited to submit their work by bringing pieces to the gallery, 20 N. State St. in Greenfield, from 3-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Next up, though, are local art educators organizing the 38th annual Hancock County Student Art Exhibition. The exhibit celebrates student artists throughout the county, from Grades K-12. The county’s school districts take turns hosting it.
This year’s event will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Eastern Hancock High School, 10320 E. County Road 250N, Charlottesville. Food trucks will be on site. A senior award recognition will take place at 6 p.m. Friday.
