The cast from A Minecraft Movie 2 teamed up to release a video confirming that the sequel now has an official title: A Minecraft Movie Squared.
The group of actors who helped bring Mojang Studios’ popular sandbox game to the big screen – which included Jack Black (Steve), Jason Momoa (Garrett), Danielle Brooks (Dawn) – showed up for the Minecraft Live May 2026 event to take viewers on a trip behind the scenes of the new movie’s set. It’s the most we’ve seen from the film since it was first announced back in October 2025, but more importantly, we now know what to call it while we wait for its 2027 premiere.
Also present for today’s reveal was Kirsten Dunst, who is confirmed to play Alex after previous teases. You can see the A Minecraft Movie Squared title in the image below.

The video game movie’s sequel was the biggest announcent from the A Minecraft Movie Squared portion of the presentation, but it was far from the only thing the cast had pulled back the curtain on. Black and Momoa opened the video with a few quick shots from the film’s set in New Zealand, revealing a first look at how production is going so far.
Despite Momoa admitting that most of the behind-the-scenes details remain “top secret,” the duo was quick to hand the video over to Matt Berry, who is also coming back for the sequel. They suggested that he’ll appear in live-action form this time after lending his iconic voice as Nitwit in the 2025 film. Berry added that he’s “not allowed to tell you who exactly” he’s playing, but a joke about a shirt that “Steve would not be wearing” may contain a few clues for fans.
Other shots from the set show Black walking through a cave and concept art for Polar Bear mob before Brooks teased that new mobs will show up for A Minecraft Movie Squared, too. Aside from a first look at Dunst as Alex, the video left other details about the movie up to viewers’ imaginations while we wait for the movie to premiere July 23, 2027.
Director Jared Hess and Mojang chief creative officer Jens Bergensten left viewers with the news that the developer will get fans ready for the new movie with something called the Minecraft Build Challenge. Details on the event can be found here, with prizes including the promise that finalists will be invited to an early screening of the movie, while one lucky winner will see one of their builds featured during the movie’s end credits.
