Just a month into a new year (and a new anime season), 2026 is already shaping up to be an outstandingly incredible year for the medium. The Winter season has already marked the return of a number of fan-favorite franchises, like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2, and the ranks of highly anticipated hits will only grow as the year progresses.
However, these spectacular sensations aren’t the only shows fans get to look forward to in 2026. Myriads of smaller, but no less anticipated and deserving of attention, debuts are scheduled to premiere in the upcoming months. Among them, these 2026 anime series will undoubtedly take the anime community by storm once fans recognize their excellence.
Marriagetoxin Is a Unique Genre-Bending Series with a Passionate Fan Following
The protagonist of Marriagetoxin, Hikaru Gero, comes from a powerful clan of professional assassins. However, the hardest mission he has to take on in the series happens to have nothing to do with murder. Instead, he must navigate the hurdles of the dating world, all in an effort to find a suitable marriage candidate and prevent his sister from facing the same burden. Helping Gero in this endeavor is the cross-dressing swindler Mei Kinosaki.
Marriagetoxin might have a very unusual premise for a romantic comedy, yet it excels at both the engrossing action and the relationship buildup, with Kinosaki and Gero’s bond being a particular highlight. The unique take on seemingly familiar tropes, as well as the palpable chemistry between the characters, attracted a large fanbase of readers to Marriagetoxin, and it will only gain more adorers once the anime premieres in April.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Marks the Return of One of the Best Shonen Storytellers in History

Manga author Hiromu Arakawa is best known to fans as the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the best, most acclaimed shonen titles in history. And this year, anime will get to experience the latest adaptation of her newest shonen fantasy series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm. The series has many of the familiar merits fans of Arakawa’s work have come to expect from her writing, like intricate magic systems, strong characterization, and even the plot’s focus on the journey of a pair of siblings.
However, it would be a disservice to Daemons of the Shadow Realm to call it a Fullmetal Alchemist clone, as it is excellent enough to shine as an independent gem. The studio working on the Daemons of the Shadow Realm’s anime adaptation is the same that handled both of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime series, Bones. So fans have no reason to expect anything but the highest quality from the upcoming adaptation.

Liar Game is a title that might be familiar to many manga readers, particularly those with a fondness for the psychological thriller genre. The Liar Game manga ran from 2005 to 2015, spawning quite a number of live-action adaptations. Yet, it will only debut as an anime during the Spring 2026 season.
The plot of Liar Game focuses on a gullible college student, Nao Kanzaki, as she gets drawn into a deadly contest of deception called the Liar Game Tournament. Teaming up with a genius swindler, Shinichi Akiyama, Nao has no choice but to learn to survive and navigate this intense battlefield of wits. Liar Game has been excessively praised for its high-stakes, strategic plots, abundance of compelling moral dilemmas, and immersive story progression filled to the brim with unpredictable turns. As such, the anime series is likely to succeed despite the source material being quite old.
Drops of God Excellently Executes a Very Unusual Concept

Another old-school manga getting an anime adaptation in the upcoming season, Drops of God is a title with a very unique premise, even by anime standards. The series’ protagonist, Shizuku Kanzaki, receives news that his estranged father, a renowned wine critic, has died and left his inheritance to Shizuku – only if he manages to correctly identify thirteen legendary wines.
On top of being completely inexperienced in the subject of wine-tasting, Shizuku also has a rival in a prodigious wine critic, Issei Tomine. The heated competition between a novice and a connoisseur manages to be both educational and immensely entertaining, giving wine-tasting the flair of an epic shonen battle. And, considering the popularity of both the manga and its live-action adaptation, the Drops of God anime was a long time coming.
Eren the Southpaw Is a Grounded Drama with Tons of Potential

While the conflict between hard work and natural talent has been explored countless times in anime and manga, it still manages to inspire novel, compelling stories. Eren the Southpaw’s central idea focuses on a similar contrast – one between a designer whose hard work merits no reward, Koichi Asakura, and Eren Yamagishi, a genius graffiti artist who, nonetheless, faces her own swarm of hurdles because of her talent.
Eren the Southpaw is a very realistic, raw portrayal of the struggles people have to endure while trying to make it in the entertainment industry, and the series’ earnest appeal allowed it to transform from a web comic into a polished, well-received shonen manga. With the Eren the Southpaw anime adaptation being handled by studio Production I.G, it is likely to be even more artistically impressive than either of its source materials.
Akane-banashi Is One of New-Gen Shonen’s Most Unexpectedly Successful Titles

Although the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is primarily known for its action titles, like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen, unconventional series often become its most successful stars. Such is the case for Akane-banashi, a unique story about teenage girl Akane Osaki and her rise through the world of rakugo, a form of Japanese performative arts focused on a lone performer conveying a story, usually of a comedic nature, using minimal props outside of their voice and body language.
To most Western fans, except those familiar with another rakugo-themed anime, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, rakugo might seem like an unexciting subject matter for an anime. However, through exceptional use of the sports anime formula, as well as outstanding character writing and a well-maintained balance of comedy and drama, Akane-banashi becomes an exhilarating story worthy of the highest praise.
Witch Hat Atelier Will Whisk Fans Away to a Mesmerising World of Magic
Outside of the year’s hugest premieres, Witch Hat Atelier is, perhaps, the most anticipated debut of 2026. And fans’ excitement, as well as uncertainty, is fully justified in the case of this exceptional gem of a series. In Witch Hat Atelier’s world, magic can only be wielded by a select few. However, dreaming of becoming a witch her entire life, a little girl named Coco dares to indulge in the forbidden ritual of using magic, leading to both a tragedy and an unexpected opportunity for her to become an apprentice of a powerful witch, Qifrey.
The Witch Hat Atelier manga has been ongoing since 2016, earning abundant praise for its engrossing and detailed worldbuilding, nuanced characterization, wondrous yet thought-provoking narration, and awe-inspiring art. The adaptation of Witch Hat Atelier, handled by studio Bug Films, has been in production for quite some time, even facing a year-long delay. Nonetheless, fans hold onto the hope that the result will succeed in capturing the one-of-a-kind charm of the source material.
