The Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri! event was held during the weekend to mark the 40th anniversary of the anime, which premiered on February 26, 1986, and with it came several announcements for future projects in the franchise. First up, Toei revealed a new anime series, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, based on the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc” of the manga’s continuation by the late Akira Toriyama, and artist Toyotarou. Picking up after the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the series will see Goku and Vegeta team up with the Galactic Patrol to stop a “planet-eater” named Moro.
In the meantime, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, an “enhanced” edition of the series’ first arc from 2015, will premiere this fall. Toei promises it’ll feature “extensive new cuts, revisions to existing scenes, a complete re-rendering of all footage, newly recorded dubbing with added score and sound effects, and a full reconstruction of the story.” This will mark the third anime version of the story, which began life as the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, and saw Goku get challenged to a fight by Beerus, the God of Destruction.
A new video game was also announced by Bandai Namco for 2027. Codenamed “Age 1000,” it will feature a “new, never-before-seen world and characters” designed by Toriyama before his passing. Very few details were provided, but “Age 1000” was previously the setting for the MMORPG Dragon Ball Online, which took place roughly 200 years after the main series, and centered around a conflict between the Time Patrol and the Dark Empire.
Additionally, a new DLC for fighting game Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero was revealed, which will add a new single player mode, and Bardock, Super Android 17, King Piccolo, and more as playable characters. It will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC this summer, with details on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 still to be confirmed. The DLC will feature a new song, “Zero,” by Hironobu Kageyama, who previously performed Dragon Ball Z‘s opening theme “Cha-La Head-Cha-La.”
Furthermore, Toei released a 40th Anniversary Special Video, featuring animated recreations of Toriyama’s original pencil art, and scored by legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The Dragon Ball Super manga currently remains on hiatus following Toriyama’s death, with only the “Survivor Granolah Saga” left to be adapted into animation.
