The fourth edition of the Biennale Matter of Art will run from 12 June to 13 September 2026 in Prague and Pardubice, Czech Republic. It will be held in three main locations: National Gallery Prague – Trade Fair Palace, GAMPA – City Gallery Pardubice, and Tusculum Prague.
The largest exhibition space within the building of National Gallery in Prague will host the biennale’s main exhibition, subtitled ‘Necessary Wishes’. Projects by dozens of artists and collectives from various regions of the world will be presented, exploring the themes of migration and displacement, as well as queer identity in the context of spirituality.
A part of the 2026 Biennale Matter of Art will be held at Tusculum Prague in the historic Chittussi Hospital complex. The atelier and residency center, which is run by the cultural platform Petrohradská kolektiv, will host a series of workshops with the interdisciplinary artist group StonyTellers.
Artists come from Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Romania, Indonesia, and further afield.
Matter of Art is a non-profit, critical, and self-critical organisation which investigates possibilities for the social and political functions of art in the present day. Matter of Art’s events and projects operate in various social contexts and include the Festival of Performance Art, podcasts about contemporary art, and the Matter of Art Online Bookstore. These activities culminate in the international Biennale Matter of Art, which began in 2020 in Prague.
