That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 Episodes #05-06

    Mind games and big gains.

    What They Say:
Corporate worker Mikami Satoru is stabbed by a random killer, and is reborn to an alternate world. But he turns out to be reborn a slime! Thrown into this new world with the name Rimuru, he begins his quest to create a world that’s welcoming to all races.

    E5 – The First Step
Rimuru attends the meeting that will determine Tempest’s membership in the Council of the West.

E6 – The Council of the West
A list of unreasonable demands from the Council makes Rimuru realize that a deeper plot is in motion.

The Review: (Please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Time for the fantasy UN to unimpress, just like the real one!

In order to dress to impress, Rimuru has his entourage chose some street clothes and suits of the council meeting. With the boys stripped of their oni outfits and wearing business casual they do look very nice. Shuna is cute as always. Only in retrospect does Rimuru realize the poncho assembly he is wearing is kids clothing, much to his frustration.

I always have questions about how Rimuru identifies. Not so much in gender, but in age. He was a middle-aged man, but he does act more like a kid while in his humanoid form. At first, he seemed to be stuck with the altered mimicry of Shizu, but side stories have implied he can change that, plus he can make artificial bodies now. He really only has himself to blame if various people mistake him for a child.

His outward looks are also causing other humans to look down on him, literally. The council introductions are a mess of overfamiliarity. The lesser lords greet Rimuru with genuine excitement and compliments on his festival. The upper lords immediately start trying to insinuate and insult, all while doing the male equivalent of the “oh-ho-ho” villainess laugh. Benimaru nearly leaps to teach them a lesson while Shuna and Souei dismiss them as not worth it.

This was just the first signs that the meeting was not going to go smoothly. From the moment Rimuru sits down it is more of a trial than a meeting of like minds. Rimuru, his internal AI supercomputer, and the rest of his core group slowly unravel the many plots and plans hatched against them. The pre-meeting meeting with Hinata did well to prepare them. It is difficult to say which of the forces set against them were directly the result of Mariabell. She did have a geas placed on the minds of many of the representatives, nudging them to treat Rimuru unfairly. Once that mind control was cleared away the path forward was clear.

The young prince of Engrassia doesn’t appear to have been mind-controlled, he’s just a complete idiot. That doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a pawn placed to cause problems. If he had nothing to do with Mariabell then he wouldn’t have been a target for ‘clean-up.’ The green mercenaries did not sign up for a battle against a demon lord, especially since they know what he is capable of and that they aren’t a match for him. None of those in the room are.

I love that you can immediately feel the moment the ladies decide that they’ve had it with the pigs insulting them. Hinata opening a can of whoop-ass on the knight was absolutely expected. Shuna calling down the wrath of god and women is perfection. Now we know why Shion was left at home, she would not have been able to hold back. It is an amazing power play as well, because it immediately affirms Rimuru’s power when his mousy attendant can calmly prove that nobody in the room would be able to take her boss in an unfair fight, let alone a fair one.

Rimuru and Tempest end up getting exactly what they want from the Western nations, acceptance and independence. The episode ends with Diablo tracking down an assassin equipped with a very unusual weapon. It turns out that somebody happened to bring a sniper rifle to the magical world.

    In Summary:
As expected, the humans completely underestimated the Demon Lord Rimuru. The multiple attempts to demean him and bring him to heal under human rule are the actions of someone bringing a knife to a sub-machine gun fight. Rimuru has never wanted to rule with fear, but he is not about to let a bunch of fool get the better of him. Aside from one broken table, he doesn’t have to get violent to prove that he is not going to be taken advantage of. It’s so satisfying watching little Miss Smartypants’ machinations fall apart. The worst among the council get to go home licking their wounds or are carted off to face a different sort of justice. Getting to see Hinata and Shuna show off some hand-to-hand fighting is just icing on the cake.
