HBO Max is still kicking, with plenty of movies and series coming to the service each month. In May, the streamer will continue to drop new episodes of some ongoing HBO Originals, most notably Rooster and Euphoria. On the movie side, we’ll be getting a mix of classics and new streaming releases, including James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown and a double whammy of Emerald Fennell. Courtesy of channels like Discovery and HGTV, there are also plenty of reality series.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Character Posters
Sony’s Spider-Verse sequel has been all over the place recently. It had a brief stint at Netflix before heading to Disney+, and now the animated hit is finding a new home on HBO Max. Taking place right after Into the Spider-Verse, the sequel introduces us and Miles to a whole host of Spidey variants. With a compelling story and one of the coolest animation styles, it’s no surprise that the Spider-erse movies quickly became some of our favorite Spider-Man movies of all time.

‘Highlight’ might be a stretch for a movie we gave a 3/10, but doesn’t that make you at least a little bit curious? In the words of Tina Fey, “you’ll have to act surprised” when it takes the turn you’d expect, but compared to previous works, this one’s more of a music video than anything. Especially thanks to the Charli XCX soundtrack. It also happens to be landing on HBO Max at the same time as Fennell’s previous film, Saltburn, which we had significantly better things to say about.

Based on an ongoing deal with U-NEXT, HBO Max will have the exclusive international streaming rights to this samurai drama based on the Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem manga. The series will follow the titular Shinsengumi, a band of samurai that defended Kyoto during the final Japanese shogunate, in a story of competing ideals and loyalties. I have a lot of faith in this one, particularly as its from the same studio as the gnarly (in a good way) Alice in Borderland.

Highlight: A Complete Unknown
Before Timothee Chalamet went ham promoting Marty Supreme, plenty of folks thought his role in Bob Dylan’s biopic could be his Oscars moment. Directed by James Mangold (Logan, Ford v Ferrari), the master of dad films, A Complete Unknown is obviously a must-watch for any Bob Dylan fan. As critic Siddhant Adlakha notes in his review, however, the movie is compelling for just about anyone as a look into “the evolution of the New York folk scene in the early 1960s.”

Sam Levinson’s Euphoria will continue to drop new episodes every Sunday, leading up to the season’s final episode at the very end of the month. We got the chance to check out the first three episodes ahead of release, and writer Alyssa Mora was sorely disappointed by them. Literally, by the way, describing them as a “stark disappointment.” Nevertheless, pretty much the whole cast is back and we can only imagine what they’ll go through by the time we get to this episode.
What’s Up With HBO Max?
The vote’s gone through, and Paramount is officially acquiring Warner Bros. What does that mean for HBO Max? Well, we’re not entirely sure quite yet. Paramount has claimed the plan is to let Warner Bros operate with independence, but the company has also already floated combining HBO Max and Paramount+ into a single mega-service. Now that’s an interesting thought.
