The World Trigger manga had a two-season anime adaptation that aired back in 2014, and it was surprising at the time that it ran for 73 episodes, as it was an open-ended series at the time. Then, we got a single-cour season that landed as part of the winter 2021 season, and a third season got underway on October 9th, 2021. Toei promoted and distributed the series wide, producing English dubs for it as well.
We learned in December 2025 about the plans to go back to re-adapt what we saw in the previous adaptation, but in a more “powered-up” kind of way that includes storylines that were skipped over from the manga. So it’s a true rebooot and not a continuation of what came before. Now, the production has dropped a new promo while confirming the returning staff and cast. The series has Morio Hatano directing it with Hiroyuki Yoshino on the scripts. Toshihisa Kaiya returns for the character designs.
The returning cast includes:
- Tomo Muranaka as Yūma Kuga
- Yūki Kaji as Osamu Mikumo
- Nao Tamura as Chika Amatori
- Yūichi Nakamura as Yūichi Jin
- Hideyuki Tanaka as Replica
The anime adaptation is working off the manga that began back in 2013 in Weekly Shonen Jump, which has been available digitally in North America to readers via Viz Media as well as compiled volumes. It has twenty-nine volumes as of the December 2025 announcement.

Plot concept: One day, a gate to another world suddenly opens in Mikado City. Aliens invincible to Earth’s weapons, called “Neighbors”, start coming over. Earth’s only line of defense is a mysterious group called the “Border” who are armed with weapons called “Triggers”.
Four years later, the city has recovered from initial attacks and citizens of Mikado City have started to get use to the Neighbor’s attacks. Yuma Kuga, a transfer student, and his classmate Osamu Mikumo find themselves fighting a Neighbor that suddenly appears. Osamu, who is actually a Border agent, activates his Trigger but is unable to defeat it. This leaves Yuma to activate his own Trigger and defeat the alien. Yuma reveals that he is not part of Border and is actually a Neighbor who has transferred from the other side.
