Multidisciplinary narrative artist Dan Goldman has announced the launch of his indie, creator-owned studio, Kinjin Storylab, and The Beat has all the details.
Kinjin Lab will serialize comics, prose novellas, short stories, podcasts, and more each week, then release collectible hardcover editions of select works. The site functions similarly to Substack, which Goldman left to go independent a few years ago.
Per the announcement,
Kinjin Storylab is an independent storytelling studio created by writer and artist Dan Goldman. Think of it as a kitten-powered satellite of love, beaming stories and comics to readers from orbit. Through genre-bending comics, audio narratives, and collectible print editions, Kinjin builds immersive worlds where strange ideas feel deeply human, and the unusual is beautifully told. Built around creator-driven storytelling, its serialized narratives unfold in real time before becoming carefully crafted books designed to last. Kinjin is for readers seeking stories outside the ordinary and worlds worth their time.
“The dirtiest word in the English language right now is ‘content’ because we’ve watched it flatten Art into a market-first product to be monetized. I don’t believe this is what people want at all: stories that should shift hearts and move culture are instead optimized for algorithmic recs and product funnels,” said Goldman in the announcement.
“We need to feel raw, messy emotional truth to make sense of our own lives and connect to others— I founded Kinjin Storylab as a pushback to this,” he continued. “By harnessing the early internet’s tools like newsletters and webcomics and print books, we are here to take big swings, tell uncompromising stories, and draw in readers hungry to engage with something true.”
Goldman offers three tiered subscriptions at Kinjin Storylab. The free tier gives readers access to short stories, novellas, and new episodes of Goldman’s comics, as well as audio versions of his stories and occasional project updates. Free subscribers can also join the Kinjin Storylab Discord server.
$5 monthly subscribers get a monthly art postcard, a $20 off coupon for the Unfinished Business hardcover, first choice of original art drops, and members-only process posts. $20 monthly subscribers get signed print comics, books, and/or zines published by Kinjin, a cameo in one of Goldman’s comics, and an invite to the quarterly Kinjin Storylab Producers Zoom call.
