“Watanabe the Kidnapper”
What They Say:
Yoshida takes over as manager of an apartment complex on behalf of his father. Awaiting him there were the attacks of the housewives driven mad by the lewd outfit brand, “Libido Cloth.” While being tossed about by the rampage of residents like Watanabe and Ichinose, the threat of Rank A housewife, Kanzaki, and the shadow of police obstructing the case further deepens the darkness within the complex. Armed with the countermeasure “Boltack Claw,” Yoshida fights them, but lurking behind him was the grasp of an even greater despair: the “Banishing Exclusion Women’s Society.”
Review: (Please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on the manga by Kenkyujo Sakuseki and Yui Joyama, the spring 2026 anime adaptation is the latest short program to arrive in Japan. The anime adaptation brought on Toshikatsu Tokoro to direct it from the series composition by Eeyo Kurosaki. Rena Nasu handled the character designs, and Elias, which has worked on numerous projects in a mostly production assistance capacity, handled this at the time as well. The original manga is known as Hellish Apartment Complex and began in 2021 and has nine digital volumes out so far, with it ongoing.
Going into a short series blind is always fun, but you know there’s some interest since there are quite a few manga volumes overall to draw from. The premise here introduces us to Yoshida, a young man that has been tasked with taking over the apartment complex that his father has. The problem is that the place has a dark reputation with the women living there that almost feels demonic. By day, it seems like a mostly ordinary apartment complex, and Yoshida has a decent handle on the housewives that he sees there the most. There’s concern about one woman there, Watanabe, as she’s pretty handsy with the kids, and Yoshida asking her to dial it back a bit just sets her off. She simply likes cute boys and doting on them! Is that so wrong? Well, considering she’s relaying this to us while using a vibrator is a bad sign. But it gets worse when someone drops a package at her door from Libido Cloth, which transforms her into a dominatrix as night falls. She’s off to capture herself a boy to dote on, but Yoshda is the one drawn into it and her demands to ease her… throbbing pain.
In Summary:
While there’s an icky moment or two in the mix here that thankfully doesn’t really go far, the concept behind this is certainly amusing. If each resident is getting clothing along the way that basically turns them a bit pervertedly evil, that’s something that Yoshida is going to have to tackle. It’s got an amusing setup and I’m curious if they can manage something from it. The biggest surprise for me was seeing how Elias did here with the animation production. With only a couple of things under their belt as their own, such as Plus-Sized Elf, I was admittedly wary since a lot of projects in this realm, even as shorts, tend to look undercooked. But this has a lot of great fluidity in motion, some strong designs, and a good sense of color design. I’m cautiously optimistic for some smutty fun here.
