Writing, directing, and finally producing a live-action film based on a work of fiction and meeting the expectations of thousands, if not millions, of book readers is a daunting feat. Here are five book adaptations you should be excited about in 2026.
Shonda Rhimes has not yet disappointed Julia Quinn’s OG readers with the fantastic, historical Regency-era melt-your-gloves-off romance series. This season of Bridgerton features the main diamond, Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha, and she has caught the attention of the rake himself, Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson. It’s a strangers-to-lovers, Cinderella retelling, and get ready to fan your face, because it is going to leave you in dreamland with those stolen glances, yearning, and that final climactic scene that oozes passion and is ripped straight out of your favorite romance book.
With over 14 film and television adaptations in Hollywood alone, Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s famous work. She penned this story with her imagination, and this has left a permanent mark on the legacy of romance and literature. The 2026 adaptation will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as the main characters. Jacob’s yearning stare, Margot’s innocence and wit, and the setting of the eerily delightful Yorkshire moors will leave you wanting to hop onto a horse and find the Heathcliff of your life, too. Emily Brontë might’ve left the world early, but she knew what she was cooking between those pages.
Christopher Nolan is ready to jump into 8 B.C. with Homer’s adaptation of the Odyssey. This is a classic epic, and it is definitely not some light reading. If you love rich Greek history, then this movie might be right up your alley. In all honesty, it’s Christopher Nolan, so you can expect something epic from this magician of a director. With a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey is highly anticipated among book lovers and movie watchers alike.
Denis Villeneuve is returning with Dune Part 3, based on the 1969 novel, Dune Messiah, by Frank Herbert. It’s gonna be bittersweet because this is the final installment of the Dune film franchise, and it was a ride for sure. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy and introducing Robert Pattinson, Dune Part 3 is expected to be set 12 years after the events of the last film and Paul rises to the throne as Emperor, but whether he knows it or not, war is near, and he needs to get it together, if he doesn’t want chaos to take over. Dune Part 3 is expected to be just as action-packed as the last films.
A space film is just what this year needed. Based on the 2021 science fiction novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with zero memory of how he ended up there. Oh, and the sun is dying, and he is the only one who can save Earth from catastrophe. That’s a ton to navigate through for an amnesiac. What will happen to Ryan? Will he figure it out? Or will he remain in space forever?
Book adaptations can be hard, especially for book readers, because, well, they’ve read the original manuscript. They have diverse imaginations and play-by-play of different scenarios in their heads. For the final verdict, you’ll just need to wait for these flicks to be released.
