WILLIAMSBURG— Award-winning author Wendy M. Neugent’s middle-grade novel Seeds of Rebellion has been named the 2026 Children’s Book International Award winner in historical fiction, recognizing excellence in storytelling, originality and impact in children’s literature.

The Children’s Book International Awards, part of the American Writing Awards, honor outstanding books from authors and publishers worldwide. Entries are judged by a panel based on writing quality, originality and overall contribution to children’s literature.

“Seeds of Rebellion”, which is the first installment in the History Detective Club series, is a time-travel mystery set in Revolutionary-era Williamsburg. The story follows a modern-day girl, Rose, as she navigates the uncertainty, danger and moral complexity of the American Revolution.

Neugent said she aimed to help young readers understand that the outcome of the American Revolution was not predetermined.

“It was uncertain, risky, and shaped by real people making difficult choices,” she said. “This award is especially meaningful because it recognizes stories that help young readers connect emotionally with history.”

Geared toward readers ages 8 to 14, the novel has gained attention among families, homeschoolers and educators for its blend of engaging storytelling and educational value.

The History Detective Club series combines mystery and adventure with real historical events, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the past.

A full list of award winners is available at the American Writing Awards website.
