During ComicPRO, Ignition press announced details for Sicko, a new comic series this July described in the vein of Doom Patrol from the creative team of writer Tini Howard and artist Amilcar Pinna as well as colorist Amanda Grazini and letterer Ariana Maher. Howard and Pinna have previously worked together on The Forgotten Queen comic series from Valiant.
Given the title, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Sicko deals with healthcare. Here’s how the publisher describes the series:
Valentine Virago has always struggled with her health. Her rare autoimmune disorder she’s had since she was a kid has defied all treatment, and as she grew older, it defied even classification. You see, Valentine can take her immune system and weaponize it. What would just be a normal sneeze to the rest of us, she can turn into a projectile of bloody miasma. Just as a start.
Fed up with being a test subject for pushy doctors, Valentine has gone on the lam in search of the freedom to be herself. Unfortunately, interested parties want her back in their care, and they are sending goons in hazmat suits, led by her one-time nurse and potential love interest, Jono. He’s offering her a spot in a private medical facility run by his parents, where others like her with maladies that aren’t found in any textbook can find solace.
Val isn’t one for institutions, however, and what some may see as a safe haven, she sees as a prison—and what is a prison but something you need to break. Can she organize the rest of the patients to escape with her, or will she be on her own once again?
Howard expressed immense joy reuniting with Pinna, saying:
“Sicko is the kind of deeply weird book I’ve been dying to write for years, and reuniting with the incredible Amilcar Pinna to create our own story has been a dream. Amilcar and Amanda and I are constantly pushing ourselves to get more surreal and more gorgeous, and we’re hitting new heights. Inspired by some of our most human struggles, Sicko is the book for anyone that’s ever had to struggle with their own body.”
Pinna echoed similar sentiments:
“I can’t wait for people to get their hands on Sicko! It is a really special project! Weird in a very good way, the type of project that I’ve always wanted to work on, Tini is writing something very special here!”
Colorist Amanda Grazini also said:
“I always love coloring Amilcar’s gorgeous artwork and Tini has the smartest and most SURREAL ideas when creating the stories on Sicko! People can expect a lot of action, romance, unique characters and mind-bending coolness in this comic!”
Ignition Press Editor-in-Chief Jamie S. Rich hyped up the project with the following:
“Sicko has exceeded and flummoxed my expectations at every turn.What started as an exceptional pitch turned into an astonishing script, and then when Amilcar came on board to give it inky flesh, the whole thing morphed again. This is a truly special book. To try to describe it almost diminishes it. You’re just going to have to see it for yourself.”
Sicko #1 is available in comic shops July 22nd from writer Tini Howard (Marian Heretic, X Men) and artist Amilcar Pinna (X-Men: First Class, Galactic), with colors by Amanda Grazini (Creepshow, The Cryos) and letters by Ariana Maher (Justice League Unlimited, Superman).
