Known originally as Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den, the manga Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court teased an important announcement earlier this year. An anime adaptation was then formally announced with the release of a promo, visual, and the main staff in March 2025.
The project previously set an April 2026 debut, but that was pushed back to a July 12th, 2026 premiere due to production delays. Now, the production has updated with a new promo that reveals and previews the opening theme song “Sunny” as performed by milet. We also got a few new cast additions with:
- Rei Igarashi as Kou Kenshū
- Ai Kayano as Shu Gabi
- Mai Nakahara as Kin Seika
- Inori Minase as Ran Hōshun
- Yui Ishikawa as Gen Kasui
Crunchyroll previously picked up the show for the summer season, where it’ll be available to subscribers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian Subcontinent.
The anime has Mitsue Yamazaki as the director, working from the scripts overseen by Yoshiko Nakamura. Ai Kikuchi is handling the character designs with Doga Kobo on the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes:
- Manaka Iwami as Kou Reirin
- Natsumi Kawaida as Shu Keigetsu
- Makoto Furukawa as Ei Gyoumei
- Yuichiro Umehara as Shin-u
- Hana Hishikawa as Lee Lee
- Farahnaz Nikray as Kou Tousetsu
The manga began in 2020 by writer Satsuki Nakamura and artist Ei Ohitsuji, serialized in Comic Zero-Sum for Ichijinsha. It has ten volumes released so far and is ongoing, with Seven Seas Entertainment releasing it in English.

Plot Concept: As maidens from the Five Clans battle for the Crown Prince’s heart, jealous Keigetsu uses forbidden magic to swap bodies with the beloved Reirin. Switching places does not guarantee happiness for Keigetsu with her new body’s ill health leaving her hanging on the verge of death. Meanwhile, Reirin, now wearing the face of a scorned outcast, must answer for Keigetsu’s crimes in a dangerous trial.
The unlikely pair become increasingly entangled in each other’s lives and they will need to work together to survive after discovering the dark conspiracies brewing beneath the palace’s genial surface. To confront the deadly threats lurking in the shadows, Reirin must embrace her new identity and defy their expectations of the court’s inept villainess.
