Whether they’re TikTok hits or Sunday Times bestsellers, I inhale all kinds of stories about falling in love, heartbreak and second chances on a weekly basis. There’s an array of romance novels to get stuck into, and the genre is really having a moment in the world of publishing. Print sales of romance fiction in the US have doubled in the last five years, and in the UK, the romance and sagas category, which had for two decades made around £20 million annually, leapt to £53.2 million in 2022 during the pandemic, growing to £69 million in 2024.
Inevitably, the popularity of these books has meant that Hollywood is paying a lot more attention. In the last few years, we’ve seen several popular books get adapted for the big screen, including several Colleen Hoover’s books, Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue and, more recently, Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry and Emily Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation. Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns And Roses are in the development process for their upcoming adaptations, too.
