Early Career and Bristol Roots
Banksy began as a freehand graffiti artist between 1990 and 1994. During this period, he was part of Bristol’s DryBreadZ Crew, also known as DBZ, alongside artists Kato and Tes. His early work was influenced by the Bristol underground scene, where artists and musicians often worked together.
He was also influenced by the artist 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the group Massive Attack. Other figures in the same scene included Nick Walker and Inkie. During this time, Banksy met photographer Steve Lazarides, who later became his agent and began selling his work.
Shift to Stencilling Technique
By around 2000, Banksy began using stencils instead of freehand graffiti. He said the change happened after he noticed a stencilled serial number while hiding from police under a rubbish lorry. The technique allowed him to complete works more quickly and avoid detection.

This shift helped him gain attention in cities such as Bristol and London. His first known large mural, ‘The Mild Mild West,’ was painted in 1997 on Stokes Croft in Bristol. The artwork shows a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail at three riot police.
Style and Themes in His Work
Banksy’s work is known for using simple images combined with short phrases. The subjects often include rats, apes, policemen, soldiers, children, and older people. Many pieces focus on themes such as war, capitalism, and authority.

Banksy displays his work on publicly visible surfaces and sometimes on self-built installations. He does not sell photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti. However, some pieces are removed from their original locations and sold.

Banksy expanded his work into film with the documentary ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop.’ The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. It was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film in January 2011.
He has also received recognition outside the art world. In 2014, Banksy was named Webby Person of the Year. His influence continues across art, film, and public discourse.
