Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani‘s Aw Yeah Comics! universe will expand next month, with Webster the Spider Monkey: Spectacular Amazement, an original graphic novel written and illustrated by Baltazar. The children’s book will follow Webster, a lab monkey who gained some amazing superpowers, and who now battles his fellow test subjects after many of them turned to villainy.
The official synopsis reads, “After eating a radioactive bug, the lab monkey Webster was caught in a fiery explosion along with other scientific lab animals. The results of the explosion altered the animals and mutated them into savagely insane, monstrous beasts! Webster’s radioactivity saved his life and granted him superpowers! Now, as a superhero, he vows to protect and help his fallen friends. But some friends may be beyond saving! Enter the villains, DOCTOR OCTOPLATYPUS, The NINJA MONKEYS, The SHIZZLERD, and the return of RHINOCEROS JACK!”
Baltazar states, “Webster is a character I created around 2000 or 2001 (around the same time as Gillbert), and he is a welcoming addition to the ever-expanding Aw Yeah Comics universe! He looks a little different from how he looked in 2000. Originally, he was a parody character, but soon his own lore began to develop around him. So naturally, I had to have him meet up and team up with the legendary Action Cat!”
He continues, saying, “Webster the Spider Monkey has been in my mind and in my sketchbook for years. I am always thinking about his universe and his stories and characters and villains and stuff. I have so many ideas for him, I couldn’t fit them all in this first volume. Ha! He was even created before Action Cat. Wow, time flies. I can’t wait to unleash him on the masses! AW YEAH!!!”
Originally self-published, the Aw Yeah Comics! series debuted back in 2013, and revolves around the characters originally created as the mascots for Baltazar and Aureliani’s comic book stores. Subsequent books were published by Dynamite and Dark Horse, until Mad Cave imprint Papercutz acquired the rights last year. The company’s first reprint, Action Cat & Adventure Bug: Let’s Do This!, was released in January.
Webster the Spider Monkey will be released on May 5, and retail at 88 pages for $17.99 in paperback and hardback. Check out a five-page preview below in the meantime. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the grim-and-gritty movie counterpart of this book, will be released afterwards in theaters on July 31.
