Over the past decade, the Transformers franchise has featured all kinds of evergreen artwork that’s used across various toys and other products. Now, more of this art has been revealed showcasing some of fans’ favorite robots in disguise.
Made by 3D artist Daniel Egan, who collaborated with Hasbro as part of its Yellowfly visual arts studio team, this art puts the loosely Generation 1-style designs on display for all to enjoy. These have since been seen, in one form or another, across countless products tied to the franchise. Now available through Egan’s Artstation account, these artworks have helped to connect the brand’s classic designs with more modern sensibilities.
New Transformers Evergreen Art Features Grimlock, Arcee, Soundwave and More
The new images of “evergreen” Transformers artwork draw heavily from the series’ past. Like many of the current-day designs in the franchise, they’re essentially updates of the classic Generation 1 designs, albeit with some notable alterations or elements from other continuities.
For instance, Grimlock is seen in robot mode, but his classic energo-sword is almost flaming with energy, recalling his fiery sword from Transformers: Animated. Arcee’s robot mode is almost identical to how she debuted 40 years ago in The Transformers: The Movie, but her alternate mode in this evergreen concept art is a motorcycle (her usual modern alt-mode) instead of her classic Cybertronian car form. One major change is Soundwave (shown in his alternate mode), who turns into an almost militarized SUV instead of a tape recorder.
“Our team created distinct poses and models for Hasbro to use in their Evergreen Key Art,” Egan stated of the art. “These are just some examples of models and poses we created here. This project was a great study in robotic and vehicle characterization and creation. Seeing our poses and models come to life through post-production was truly a rewarding experience.”
Besides the aforementioned Soundwave, Grimlock and Arcee, other characters shown are Mirage and the logical Decepticon Shockwave (in both modes) and Wheeljack in vehicle mode. There are also images of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, the Allspark Cube (from the first live-action Transformers movie) and an energon cube.
Available on the artist’s Artstation platform, they’re the perfect example of how the designs for the brand have come full-circle. Instead of eschewing G1 accuracy like the franchise had for years, characters are now portrayed in increasingly classical designs, with this evergreen art proof of that direction.
