The creators behind some of the biggest names in anime and manga are all getting behind Netflix’s new anime-original film, Cosmic Princess Kaguya!.
Per Oricon, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! director Shingo Yamashita (key animation, Naruto Shippuden, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) recently unveiled the various original illustrations crafted in support of the series by some of the industry’s biggest names, whose animated adaptations Yamashita worked on previously.
Among these is a striking illustration by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, whose accompanying message stated, “Congratulations on the release of Cosmic Princess Kaguya!. I sincerely hope that this work reaches many people.” Creators such as Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen) and Sosuke Toka (Ranking of Kings) likewise lent their support with new illustrations, as seen below.

Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto also lent an original illustration to this effort, which was shared with a statement singing high praises of Cosmic Princess Kaguya!. “Seigo Yamashita’s incredible animation just keeps going nonstop,” he said. “It was a screen filled with happiness from beginning to end.”
The Rising of the Shield Hero creator Aneko Yusagi also offered some high praise of Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, noting, “I tend to focus quite a bit on backgrounds, but the level of detail in the camera work and the flow of the combat scenes were incredible and completely captivated me. There were so many elements that felt fun and entertaining, and on top of that, the music was clearly given great care. I could not take my eyes off it,” he added.
Directed by Yamashita from a screenplay co-written alongside Saeri Natsuo, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! serves as an updated, fantastical take on the classic Japanese fable The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The official logline for Cosmic Princess Kaguya! from Netflix reads, “Iroha’s life gets knocked off its orbit when Kaguya, a carefree runaway from the Moon, moves in and convinces her to perform in a virtual world together.”
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! follows Iroha Sakayori, a high school student struggling to keep her life on track after the tragic death of her father, which left her to live on her own for the first time. When Iroha discovers a strange baby that quickly grows into a young girl claiming to be from the moon, she finds herself pulled into an extraterrestrial attempt to rewrite the classic story with a proper happy ending.
Yamashita himself previously promised fans that Cosmic Princess Kaguya! would be “a bright, fun film,” largely influenced by his “love for unique characters” and “deep affection for the internet culture.” Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is produced by Twin Engine, with animation by Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! was quite possibly the most hotly anticipated Netflix anime release of the month. However, the streaming service has also added other new anime offerings to its catalog in January for international fans, including Pokémon Horizons: Season 3 — Rising Hope and the teen romance series Love Through a Prism. Netflix also has plenty more hit anime coming later this year, such as new content for One Piece, a brand-new season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the final season of Beastars, among other titles.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! began streaming exclusively on Netflix as of Jan. 22.
