Odessa A’zion will no longer star in A24’s Deep Cuts. The Marty Supreme breakout star has dropped out of the upcoming film adaptation after her casting received online backlash.
The actor released a statement late Wednesday night as a series of Instagram Story posts (via Deadline). “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie,” the first of A’zion’s posts read.
A’zion’s casting was announced earlier this week. She was set to play Zoe Gutierrez, who in the original 2021 novel by Holly Brickley is of Mexican heritage and Jewish. Since A’zion is not Mexican, fans online argued that she shouldn’t have accepted the role and that a Latin American actor should be cast instead.

A’zion went on to state on her Instagram Story that she agreed with the criticism and had been unaware of the character’s identity before accepting the role, writing, “Thank you guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so sorry that this happened.”
She explained, “It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know???”
“Fuck that. I’m out! I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being,” the actor added.
An adaptation of Deep Cuts was first reported to be in the works at A24 in February 2025. At the time, Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler were set as the leads, but both eventually dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey have since been cast in their respective roles.
Set in the 2000s, Deep Cuts is a love story about two music-obsessed twentysomethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging, and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade. Sean Durkin will direct, reuniting him with A24, who released his 2023 biopic The Iron Claw.
Deep Cuts would have served as a mini Marty Supreme reunion for A’zion. Josh Safdie, who directed the crowd-pleasing 2025 movie, is attached as a producer, as are Marty Supreme producers Eli Bush and Ronald Bronstein.
While A’zion has been acting steadily since 2016, Marty Supreme proved to be her breakout role. She has received several nominations for her performance in the A24 movie, such as Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the upcoming Actor Awards.
A’zion will be heard next in the upcoming Stranger Things cartoon, Tales from ’85, which will be released later this year on Netflix.
