Star Wars may be one of the biggest franchises in movie history, but it also comes with a decades-old curse. George Lucas’s iconic sci-fi franchise turns fifty years old next year, and now includes more than a dozen films, multiple Disney+ series, and several animated shows. With generations of fans working to keep the franchise at the top of the charts, Star Wars is even more popular today than it was when it first came out.
There’s a fifty-year-old curse that hovers over many actors in the Star Wars franchise that persists to this day. Regardless of talent or fan approval, many actors cast in George Lucas’s movies struggle to book other roles later. This makes it all the more surprising to learn that Academy Award winner and Hollywood royalty Leonardo DiCaprio almost played a pivotal role in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Had history unfolded differently, DiCaprio’s career may not have become what it is today.
Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Played Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones

It may surprise Star Wars fans to learn that Leonardo DiCaprio very nearly played the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Prequel Trilogy. The actor reportedly met with George Lucas for Episode II — Attack of the Clones. At the time of the film’s production, DiCaprio was best known for his work in James Cameron’s Titanic a few years prior and was still considered a rising star. However, the actor claimed that he wasn’t ready for this kind of role at that point in his career and declined the part.
DiCaprio was far from the only major actor to be considered for the role of Anakin Skywalker. The search for a young Anakin stretched far and wide, with many future stars auditioning for the role. Among those considered were Paul Walker, Topher Grace, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Hanks, and Rob McElhenney. Over 1,000 actors auditioned for the part, though it is unclear how many George Lucas officially considered to play Anakin before eventually landing on Hayden Christensen.
Hayden Christensen starred as Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. He also makes scattered appearances in other Star Wars projects, including a cameo at the end of the remastered edition of Return of the Jedi, replacing Sebastian Shaw as the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker. More recently, Christensen returned for an audio-only cameo in The Rise of Skywalker and later made more substantial appearances in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka. He is currently set to return for the upcoming second season of Ahsoka, which premieres sometime in 2026.
Obviously, casting Leonardo DiCaprio would have fundamentally changed the Prequel Trilogy and Anakin Skywalker’s character. Every actor brings something different to the table, even when going out for the same roles with the same character arcs and lines. Ultimately, a role finds the right actor, no matter how many talented professionals go out for the part. If DiCaprio had agreed to star in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the character of Anakin Skywalker might not have felt the same as he does today.
Leonardo DiCaprio certainly hasn’t been starved for work since turning down a part in Star Wars. He has gone on to become considered one of the most talented actors of all time, and even won an Academy Award for his role in 2015’s The Revenant. As intriguing as it would have been to see DiCaprio’s take on Anakin Skywalker, his decision to decline Star Wars was ultimately a good move for himself and for his career.
Playing Anakin Skywalker Would Have Ruined Leonardo DiCaprio’s Career

As interesting as it is to imagine what Leonardo DiCaprio’s version of Anakin Skywalker would have looked like, including his descent toward the Dark Side and transformation into Darth Vader, it is ultimately a good thing for the actor’s career that he never appeared in Star Wars. The popular sci-fi franchise is known to “curse” many of its leading cast members. Ever since the first Star Wars movie in 1977, unknown actors who appear in the franchise struggle to book other roles thereafter.
The original Star Wars, now known as A New Hope, had this effect on much of its main cast. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher both struggled to book major roles after appearing in Star Wars. While both did relatively well themselves over time, neither ever played a role as iconic as their Star Wars character.
Harrison Ford is the only member of the main cast who managed to break the Star Wars mold, becoming the rare exception to the franchise’s unfortunate curse. He went on to be known for many other iconic characters besides Han Solo, including Indiana Jones, Rick Deckard, and Thaddeus “Thunderbolts” Ross.
Hayden Christensen is the Prequel Trilogy actor most affected by the Star Wars curse. The prequels’ depiction of Anakin Skywalker is infamously controversial, and Christensen took much of the heat for the creative decisions of Lucasfilm. While he has continued to work since starring in the Prequel Trilogy, Christensen has never appeared in a movie or franchise nearly as big as Star Wars. Presumably, the same could have been true of DiCaprio had he booked the role instead.
Additionally, appearing in Star Wars would have most likely prevented DiCaprio from starring in other major movies that built up his early career. The same year as Attack of the Clones, the rising actor appeared in Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can. The former is the first of many partnerships with acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, leading to many of DiCaprio’s other iconic movies, including The Aviator, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Catch Me If You Can, on the other hand, offered DiCaprio the chance to work with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg and established his strength as a leading man.
Had history played out differently, Leonardo DiCaprio might not have landed the roles that ultimately paved his path to becoming one of the most respected movie stars working in Hollywood today. As great as he might have been as Anakin Skywalker, his career would look much different had he replaced Hayden Christensen in the role.
Can Leonardo DiCaprio Still Appear in Star Wars?
After turning down a role in Attack of the Clones, there is still an outside chance that Leonardo DiCaprio could appear in a future Star Wars project. The actor is known to be a die-hard fan of the franchise and would most likely be interested in playing a character therein if it were the right fit. He originally turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker because he felt his career wasn’t quite ready yet, but he could hardly make the same excuse today. Rather, the exact opposite problem might be true: DiCaprio’s career may be far beyond the point of showing up in a Star Wars project.
Even so, there are plenty of opportunities for acclaimed actors to make their mark in George Lucas’s beloved sci-fi franchise. Star Wars has no shortage of upcoming spinoff movies and television shows in the works. The Mandalorian & Grogu leads the charge on a new theatrical era for the franchise, and could be hiding major cameos.
Additionally, Star Wars: Starfighter, which is slated to hit theaters in 2027, has already attracted a very impressive cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth. It wouldn’t be a shock to see DiCaprio sign on to a Star Wars movie with that level of star power.
Star Wars is on the verge of a bold new era with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan taking over Lucasfilm from former president Kathleen Kennedy. This means that the franchise will most likely be exploring new narratives that could open the door for major talents like Leonardo DiCaprio to appear. While most of Filoni and Brennan’s plans remain unexplored so early in their reign, now would be the perfect time to solidify their era with a major star attached to show up in one of their first projects. Whether or not that star could be Leo remains to be seen.
Leonardo DiCaprio has a strange but ultimately positive relationship with the Star Wars franchise, dating all the way back to the early production for Attack of the Clones. DiCaprio may not have gotten the chance to play Anakin Skywalker, but he could always show up as another Star Wars character someday.
