Deadline reports Extraction 3 is set to go into production this summer, with Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, and Golshifteh Farahani all set to reprise their roles from the first two films, and Sam Hargrave returning to the director’s chair. While plot details weren’t provided, the film will presumably follow Hemsworth’s mercenary Tyler Rake on another rescue mission. David Weil (Citadel) will take over from producer Joe Russo as the film’s screenwriter.
Angela Russo-Otstot, chief creative officer of Joe and Anthony Russo‘s production company AGBO, confirmed the news at Tudum, stating, “It’s incredibly exciting to continue our partnership with Netflix as we further expand the Extraction universe. It is also our privilege to continue the creative collaboration with Sam Hargrave, Chris Hemsworth, and this outstanding team who have built a stellar action franchise that has proven itself a true standout for audiences around the globe.”
Based on the 2014 Oni Press series Ciudad, which the Russo brothers created with writer Ande Parks and artist Fernando León González, the first Extraction film was released on Netflix to generally positive reviews in 2020, and proved to be a hit at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the streaming service’s most popular original film at the time. The sequel followed in 2023, after which Hemsworth took a break from filming movies to spend more time with his family, while Hargrave took the helm of Apple TV’s Matchbox: The Movie, due out October 9.
Hemsworth was reportedly weighing his options for work this summer, and became excited enough to prioritize the new sequel after reading the script. Which raises the question: shouldn’t the Thor star be filming the similarly action-heavy Avengers: Secret Wars (out December 17, 2027) around the same time? Does this mean the God of Thunder will bite the bullet in this December’s Avengers: Doomsday? As with all things MCU, we’ll have to wait to find out.
Extraction 3 joins two spin-offs currently in the works: Tygo, a Korean film starring Don Lee, and Mercenary, a series with Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, and many more. The franchise also made a return to comics this month, albeit at Ignition Press instead of Oni, in Parks and Ronan Cliquet‘s Tyler Rake: An Extraction Story. Issue #1 of the series is out now, and a reissue of Ciudad under the title Extraction will also be released on Tuesday, April 14.
