DC Studios and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour have announced Superman Experience: Defenders Unite, a new attraction at Stage 5 on the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Hollywood, opening Saturday, April 18 (aka Superman Day, the anniversary of his first appearance in 1938’s Action Comics #1.) The experience offers 3D virtual reality gameplay, animatronics, and an original storyline, where Superman shares his powers with guests to help him fend off an incursion from Darkseid.
The press release elaborates:
The experience’s central hub – focused on the Fortress of Solitude – will feature interactive mini games, unique props, and social-media worthy photo opportunities including:
– A life-sized audio animatronic Gary (Robot #4), Superman’s Kryptonian robot companion
– Doghouse of Solitude mini game where fans can play catch with Krypto
– A two-player puzzle game where guests can activate the Phantom Zone Projector
– As guests complete the activities listed above – along with more activities yet to be revealed – the Chaos Crystal on display will activate the entire Fortress of Solitude
Guests can also grab a beverage or themed snack at the Fortress of Solitude lounge and shop for exclusive merchandise within a new Daily Planet-themed retail store. A new comic book, exclusive to Superman Experience, will be available for fans to purchase on-site from DC. The custom comic, Superman: Defenders Unite, is written by Josh Trujillo with a cover art by Bernard Chang.
The experience is separate from the Studio Tour itself, meaning tickets will be sold separately. To buy them, head to the official website, or the Studio Tour’s site for bundle offers.
As it is ostensibly set in the same universe as the new film, Superman Experience marks the first appearance from Darkseid in DC Studios’ new universe. The dark god of Apokolips, who was created by Jack Kirby, made his debut in the DC Extended Universe in the director’s cut of Justice League (2017), but James Gunn has said he won’t be the DCU’s overarching villain in the reboot, “for a lot of reasons, because [Justice League director] Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way, and because of Thanos in Marvel.” However, the character is set to appear in the animated spin-off Mister Miracle, based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’s acclaimed comic of the same name.
In further DCU Superman news this week, The Hollywood Reporter states Maxima will appear in the sequel Man of Tomorrow. Finalists for the part include Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies), Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), and Wonder Woman fan casting favorite Adria Arjona (Andor). Created by Roger Stern and George Pérez in 1989, Maxima is traditionally an alien queen who becomes infatuated with Superman, and wants him to sire an heir.
Man of Tomorrow, written and directed again by Gunn, will pit David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult’s Superman and Lex Luthor against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger), and be released on July 9, 2027. The movie will also bring in Aaron Pierre as the Green Lantern John Stewart, and bring back Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathon Fillion as Guy Gardner, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.
(Whether Milly Alcock will also return for the film after her solo movie, due out June 26, remains to be seen, but it’d be surprising if she didn’t, right?)
