Dark Horse Comics has announced Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft, a new, gothic entry in the franchise by writer Amy Chu, artist Ariela Kristantina, colorist Arif Prianto, and letterer Haley Rose-Lyon. Timed to coincide with the upcoming sourcebook Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, the four-issue series follows monster hunter Ez D’Avenir on a quest to save the titular cursed land.
Issue #1 cover A, by Guillem March
The official synopsis reads, “Ravenloft is falling apart, and nobody knows why. Fortunately, monster hunter Ez D’Avenir is on the case! She’s searching the frozen wasteland of Lamordia for an undead creature that may hold the key to Ravenloft’s fate. But when Darklord Viktra Mordenheim catches wind of her quest, Ez is suddenly the one being hunted!”
The press release also teases the book will “unite Rudolph van Richten’s protégés from across the horrifying domains of Ravenloft.” Dr. Van Richten, who might be described as the game’s take on Dracula‘s Abraham Van Helsing, is a vampire slayer considered the greatest monster hunter in Ravenloft. Ez (full name Ezmerelda) is a Vistani (Romani-inspired) hunter with a fraught relationship with Van Richten, because of her family’s role in his son’s disappearance, while Viktra Mordenheim is a female analogue of Victor Frankenstein.
This will mark Dark Horse’s third D&D series, after The Fallbacks (concluding June 3), and Total Party Killers (beginning July 22); it’ll also become Dark Horse’s first set outside the franchise’s traditional, high fantasy world of Forgotten Realms. Previous comics series set in Ravenloft include 2016’s Shadows of the Vampire (by Jim Zub, Max Dunbar, and Nelson Daniel), and 2022’s Mordenheim-centric Orphan of Agony Isle (by Casey Gilly, Bayleigh Underwood et al.)
Issue #1 of Ravenloft will be released on August 19, with a main cover by Guillem March, and variants by Riley Rossmo, Francesco Francavilla, Todor Hristov, and Angela Wu. You can check those out below in the meantime. Ravenloft: The Horrors Within itself will be released on June 16, and become available to pre-order on Monday, April 13.
