Let’s set aside the noxious cloud of internet surrounding Highguard for a second, ignore those overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews full of folks who’ve played it for less than an hour, and pretend Highguard is just a new free-to-play FPS that came out today.Hey, Highguard is out. I played around six hours between launch day and a preview event in Los Angeles last week. It’s got slick gunplay, a neat 3v3 mode that I’ve never seen anywhere else, and a business model that sounds less scummy than most free shooters. It’s pretty fun. I don’t think I love it.I will commend…

Code Vein 2 is the latest in a long line of action RPGs chasing the lofty heights of FromSoftware’s immortal Dark Souls series, and like so many others before it, falls well short of the mark. Bland visually and uninspiring narratively, Bandai Namco’s latest soulslike foray (previously publishing the aforementioned Souls series, Elden Ring) boasts solid mechanical foundations, only to undermine them with repetition. The sequel to 2019’s more interesting Code Vein, Code Vein 2 tells a new story only loosely connected to the original, sharing a few themes and concepts. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans coexist with…

The premise of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s light novel All You Need is Kill might be one of the most brilliant concepts of the 21st century. Besides having one of the greatest titles of all time, his story about a soldier stuck in a time loop and forced to become a killing machine against alien invaders remains evergreen. This story speaks to a century where countries become embedded forever wars while the young people fighting become killers for pointless reasons. Previously adapted for other mediums, the novel is now a visually sumptuous anime adaption from legendary animation Studio 4°C. This iteration adapts…
