The following contains spoilers for Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1, now streaming on Netflix.
Of all the fairy tales, the story of Cinderella remains one of the most popular, especially when it comes to screen adaptations. There have been numerous Cinderella retellings on both the big and small screens, and one of the latest is Bridgerton Season 4. While it still follows the tried-and-true tropes associated with the fairy tale, including an evil stepmother and stepsisters and a lost item of clothing, Bridgerton adds one unique twist that makes a world of difference.
Bridgerton Season 4 centers on Benedict, the second-oldest son, who falls in love with an unusual woman at a masquerade ball. Although he doesn’t know it yet, audiences learn that her name is Sophie Baek, and she’s a maid who snuck into the party in defiance of her cruel stepmother. Sophie is obviously the Cinderella figure, but she has one further problem that other Cinderella-type characters don’t usually face: she’s the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman.
Sophie Baek’s Bridgerton Backstory, Explained

Viewers learn in flashbacks during Bridgerton Season 4, Episode 2, “Time Transfixed,” that Sophie was the product of an affair between the Earl of Penwood and a maid. After her mother died, Sophie’s father took her in as his ward. A ward is a child of a certain social standing whose father has died and is appointed a new guardian to take charge of their affairs until they come of age. While this might’ve seemed like a plausible cover story, Sophie’s true parentage appears to have been an open secret at Penwood House.
During the Regency Era, children born out of wedlock, like Sophie, were highly stigmatized. They weren’t legally allowed to inherit anything from their parents, and they faced judgment for the circumstances of their birth. So far, only Sophie, Lady Penwood and the servants at Penwood House know about her parentage, but if word gets out, Sophie could be banished from society in Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2.
This detail makes Lady Penwood’s motivations a bit more nuanced. In most Cinderella stories, the stepmother is jealous of Cinderella and sees her as a threat to her own daughters’ marriage prospects. Even though this is still true of Araminta in Bridgerton, Sophie’s illegitimacy actually could damage her and her daughters’ reputations. It doesn’t excuse her cruel behavior, but since Penwood clearly didn’t tell his new wife about Sophie before they married, Araminta was put in a tough position.
Bridgerton Gives Benedict and Sophie the Perfect Obstacle
So far, most of Bridgerton‘s couples have been of similar social standing. The main exception has been Anthony, the viscount who had an opera singer mistress, Siena Rosso, in Season 1 and later married Kate Sharma, who was the daughter of a secretary. Benedict might only be the second son and not as high ranking as his brother, but with Sophie being both a maid and illegitimate, it will be considerably harder for the pair to find their happy ever after.
Sophie’s secret isn’t public knowledge, but even just being a regular maid makes marriage to Benedict quite difficult. This is why Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1 ends with Benedict asking her to become his mistress instead of his wife. While social standing becomes a non-issue in most Cinderella stories because the prince can marry whomever he chooses, Benedict doesn’t have that level of authority or freedom and is expected to marry someone from the same social stratum.
At the same time, Sophie understands the real drawbacks of being a mistress and wants better for herself, so she walks away from him. While they could bypass society’s rules by leaving society altogether, it would be rather sad for Benedict to leave his family behind. Given the nature of Bridgerton, Benedict and Sophie will probably find a way to marry and still be accepted, but it’ll be fascinating to see how they get there.
Bridgerton Season 4 will return for Part 2 on Netflix on February 26, 2026.
