After six years, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins will reunite on the small screen for Season 5 of the acclaimed superhero satire series The Boys. Though this newer TV show has exceptional ratings, it has gained even more attention from the Supernatural fandom, who are excited to see these three former co-stars work together again.

However, despite the hype of the next season of The Boys, Supernatural fans will never be distracted from their favorite episodes of the long-running fantasy TV series. There are over three hundred episodes in the show, which are still enjoyed by a vast audience of new and dedicated viewers. Among these many episodes are a few stand-out installments that fans have never been able to stop talking about.

Mystery Spot Is A Brutal Comedy Special

“Mystery Spot” is a dark episode of Supernatural in which Dean is killed during an investigation, continuing the shocking and tragic death trend in the series. However, Sam wakes each morning to relive his brother’s death in different and horrifying ways hundreds of times. Eventually, he learns a sinister magical being is keeping him in a time warp, tormenting him with Dean’s loss repeatedly.

This Season 3 installment is one of the best Dean Winchester episodes, featuring Jensen Ackles in one of his most comedic roles, dying in increasingly ridiculous and morbidly humorous ways. However, in addition to the hilarious moments in “Mystery Spot,” the storyline is also unsettling, featuring Sam’s torment and agony as he fails to prevent his brother’s demise hundreds of times. These different perspectives provide a layered storyline that emphasizes the quirky and unsettling nature of this fantastical world.

While there are various sad scenes in Supernatural, there are dozens of heartbreaking and upsetting moments in this single episode. Fans continue to cheer for “Mystery Spot” as one of the best episodes in the TV series, mainly due to the comedic tone but also because it’s known for having the most deaths in a single installment.

No Rest for the Wicked Went Full Horror

“No Rest for the Wicked” is the third season finale of Supernatural, focusing on the last day Dean has in his contract with the demon, Lilith, before he is dragged to Hell. Along with Sam and Bobby, they fight against the clock, hunting down Lilith in hopes of defeating her before it’s too late. During this time, Dean tries to make peace with his impending demise if all their efforts fail, and he is taken down by Hell’s fearsome Hellhounds.

This is a very early plot in the show, but this is one of the most important milestones in Dean Winchester’s character arc. In this horrifying finale, the beloved main character is brutally torn apart by invisible but deadly Hellhounds. Throughout the storyline, Dean is haunted by his first violent demise and the aftermath, which was his year in Hell, in which he was tormented and then forced to do terrible things to other damned souls.

This episode is difficult to watch because of the bloody and heartbreaking Supernatural scene, but fans love the emotional moments in “No Rest for the Wicked” that were increasingly rare as the series continued. It is also known as one of the few episodes that went full horror, featuring an intense plot that ended in a terrifying, gory scene.

Lazarus Rising Introduced the Most Important Secondary Character

Following the horrifying Season 3 finale, “Lazarus Rising” is a great Supernatural character introduction that begins with Dean crawling out of his grave after spending a lengthy period in Hell. Though Sam and Bobby are overjoyed to be reunited with Dean, they are all weary of what powerful being was capable of saving him from eternal damnation. While investigating this strange turn of events, they realize they are facing something they’ve never encountered before.

“Lazarus Rising” is a fan-favorite Supernatural episode because it introduces the angel Castiel, who will go on to be the most substantial character aside from Sam and Dean. It also introduces the angels and demons plot that continues throughout the series, highlighting the nuances of Heaven’s soldiers. From this first angel-centric episode, it was obvious that Supernatural‘s angels aren’t just gracious protectors, but complex beings capable of great harm as well as good.

This early season was a great era for Supernatural, which features the most beloved characters early on in their storylines before they evolved with each world-changing event. Fans adore this installment because it represents Castiel’s origins and how different he was before his loving relationship with the Winchesters.

Supernatural’s Comedy Doesn’t Get Better Than Yellow Fever

In this funny episode of Supernatural, Sam and Dean investigate a case in which seemingly healthy people are suddenly dying due to a mysterious illness. When they dig into the pasts of the victims, they come up with the theory that this ghost-related ailment is targeting unkind people. Unfortunately, Dean contracts the illness, forcing them to rush against a time limit before Dean’s heart gives out due to excessive fear.

“Yellow Fever” is a hilarious episode because Dean acts completely out of character, going from his normal, serious and heroic self to a paranoid, jumpy person incapable of facing a powerful ghost. However, this is also a deep Supernatural episode, including a heartbreaking backstory for a vengeful ghost who suffered an unjust death. This narrative has an exceptional balance between the goofy humor occasionally seen in the series and the surprisingly wholesome undertones.

Though some viewers consider this Supernatural episode problematic because of the unsettling storyline of the vengeful but sympathetic ghost. Despite this criticism, “Yellow Fever” holds up as a major fan-favorite episode that is iconic for its comedic, fearful Dean moments.

All Hell Breaks Loose Is Non-Stop Intensity

“All Hell Breaks Loose” is a devastating Supernatural episode split into two parts that features Sam and Dean facing the Yellow-Eyed Demon, Azazel, who intends to use people with demon blood. As Sam engages in a bloody fight for survival against the other gifted demon-blood children, Dean struggles to defend his brother. When all seems lost, Dean makes a horrifying decision that changes the course of his life forever.

In part one of this installment, Sam is killed by another strengthened by demon blood and dies in Dean’s arms, which is still one of the saddest moments in Supernatural nearly twenty years later. This episode is intense and action-packed, holding up as one of the most suspenseful moments in the storyline. “All Hell Breaks Loose” is true to its title, offering the audience a non-stop finale with a couple of unexpected twists.

This is another defining Dean Winchester moment, which is a key reason why fans can’t stop talking about this season finale after many more successful Supernatural seasons. Though this is a heartbreaking Sam death, his demise and revival are nearly overshadowed by Dean’s emotional sacrifice.

Swan Song Represents the Best of Supernatural

“Swan Song” is a Supernatural season finale in which Sam and Dean’s (initial) final showdown with Lucifer occurs. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Sam allows Lucifer to possess his body, fighting for control so he can throw the devil into his cage in Hell. During this battle, the archangel Michael possesses their long-lost younger brother Adam, who is dangerous to all but also determined to face Lucifer.

This Season 5 finale was supposed to be the last installment of the fantasy TV show, but the popularity and dedicated fanbase ensured the continuation of Sam and Dean’s story. However, it’s still clear “Swan Song” would have been a wonderful conclusion because the Supernatural episode is flawless from beginning to end. It includes one of the emotional battles in the entire show, breaking the hearts of fans with a bloodied Dean at the mercy of his possessed brother.

Some viewers believe it was a huge mistake not to end Supernatural with this masterpiece of a finale, but that doesn’t diminish the captivating allure of “Swan Song.” This episode holds up above all others in the lengthy series, highlighting the emotional appeal of Supernatural that resulted in a major fandom.
