Wonder Man interview highlights with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: auditions, awards, and how slowing down helped him say yes to Simon Williams.
In Part 2 of Heroes Journey Podcast Episode 15, Sean O’Connell gets Yahya’s most practical acting philosophy. In this Wonder Man interview, Yahya explains why auditions matter even at higher levels: you’re checking fit, not begging. “Just because you don’t get the job does not mean that you were not qualified.”
He also punctures the “next level” illusion. Yahya says an Emmy didn’t make him happy, so he stopped believing a bigger trophy would fix anything. Instead, he focuses on living well: “The better I get at life, the better I get at acting.” That mindset shows up when he talks about walking away from nonstop work (including a Mad Max project), landing a dream stage role, and then getting the Wonder Man offer.
