For the tens of thousands of fans preparing to descend upon the San Diego Convention Center next month for San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the arrival of the physical badge marks the true start of the convention season. This year, the excitement is amplified by a design that is a massive hit with sci-fi fans: an official spotlight on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds; and no, despite online rumors, the art does not appear to be AI-generated.
And that’s not all. The OG Internet Daddy and Captain James T. Kirk actor William Shatner teased at Liverpool Comic Con a massive Star Trek event on Saturday night at the convention.
These announcements come as bittersweet news for Star Trek fans, as rumors that the franchise’s historic nine-year run is winding down.
Paramount learns its lesson: actual artwork arrives

Comic-Con badges are famous for featuring major upcoming movies or television series, effectively serving as collectible artwork for the weekend. Paramount has taken the reins for 2026, delivering a visually striking tribute to Strange New Worlds that features a sleek, retro-futuristic aesthetic of the Captain Christopher Pike-helmed (Anson Mount) series, highlighting the iconic Starfleet delta badge alongside stunning, high-quality imagery of the USS Enterprise exploring deep space.
According to early reactions tracked by the San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog, the sleek sci-fi artwork is a major upgrade from Paramount’s 2024 badge, which was widely reviled online. The blog noted that Paramount successfully “learned from the ‘blue mountain’ year” (referencing a previous, heavily critiqued corporate placeholder design), instead delivering beautiful, genuine imagery that perfectly matches the spirit of the convention.
While rumors initially surfaced online that the badge was AI-generated, that does not appear to be the case. Although Comic-Con International initially came under fire for its rules (that had been in place since at least 2024) allowing AI-generated art at this year’s Art Show, the backlash among fandom led the company to walk back that policy, with the new policy reading: “Material created by Artificial Intelligence (AI), either partially or wholly, is not allowed in the art show. If there are questions, the Art Show Coordinator will be the sole judge of acceptability.”
Indeed, upon further investigation, it appears that this year’s Strange New Worlds badge art comes from the Star Trek Online game. “They used the version of the design that showed up in Discovery, not the slightly modified one for Strange New Worlds,” someone commented on TrekCentral‘s announcement of the badge. “It’s not even an image of one of the show models; it was a cutout of a promo image of Star Trek Online‘s game model.”
Others added that the pylons on the design support that assumption, as does the fact that Strange New World‘s ship design has “more windows around the saucer and a slightly curved neck section.”
A bittersweet spotlight, as the franchise winds down
While the Strange New Worlds imagery on the badge has been met with mixed reactions, its prominent placement arrives at a turbulent time for the Star Trek fandom. The badge will be hitting fan mailboxes amid rampant industry rumors that the franchise’s historic nine-year run is drawing to an abrupt close.
Paramount has already confirmed that Strange New Worlds will conclude its run with its upcoming fifth season. Coupled with the recent news that the spin-off Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will not continue past its second season, the franchise currently has no new television series or films actively in production (though a film has been confirmed to be in-development). With the impending expiration of franchise helm Alex Kurtzman‘s contract and little information about Star Trek‘s streaming future, many fans view this SDCC badge as a beautiful, bittersweet monument to a rapidly closing chapter.
William Shatner teases a “massive” Star Trek event at SDCC 2026
Despite the anxiety surrounding the franchise’s long-term future, Paramount is rumored to be pulling out all the stops for SDCC 2026. Original Series legend William Shatner accidentally sparked a wave of hype when he leaked that a massive, franchise-spanning Star Trek event is locked in for Saturday night, July 25th.
Speaking to interviewers at Comic Con Liverpool, the original Captain James T. Kirk revealed that Paramount invited him to participate in a major celebration. Shatner shared:
“It’s a juggernaut for the ratings and number of shows, yes. In fact, there’s a there’s a meeting in San Diego at a big convention in San Diego, where a lot of people go, a lot of programs go to promote themselves, and on a Saturday night, there’s a big Star Trek event. Bigger than [a regular convention]. I mean all the shows. And they’ve invited me. And I can’t go, because I’m busy. And it’s too bad, I’m sorry about that.”
While Shatner will be on the opposite coast attending GalaxyCon Raleigh, his invitation indicates that Paramount isn’t just focusing on the current slate. The studio is looking to lean heavily into the franchise’s broader legacy ahead of its upcoming 60th anniversary.
With the Season 4 premiere of Strange New Worlds landing on July 23—the exact first official day of the convention—fans are anxious to see whether this massive Saturday event will be used to announce a surprise renewal, pitch a rumored successor series like Star Trek: Year One, or signal an extended hiatus for the storied sci-fi universe under its new Skydance management.
With the badges now shipping, the final countdown is on. Find more information about badges and how to get them on the official Comic-Con International website.
